I'm guilty of being a traditionalist. As it stands now I'm thinking Dort at center and Yeanay at the 4 with Illic as the backup maybe to both. And to barsad's point, let's use the last roster spot to get another big guy so that we have a backup at both the 4 and 5. No more guards or wings.
Agreed - and while we're hoping, how about an offensive scheme that gets players some open shots rather than always relying on the player to win a one-on-one matchup.

You mean watching AS 10-dribble combo moves where everyone else just stands around isn't an efficient offense???

I was with you until you said Dort was our starting center, Red. I don't see how 3.6 pts/game and a 60% free throw pct gets us to 18-20 wins. I would much rather give Ilic a shot at being a "big man" even if he has to match up with guys a few inches taller.

Much needed size in Yeanay, I really hope he's starting. There's one more roster spot by my count. Can we get another guy over 6-8?
Let's get him on the team first. Still no confirmation that has happened.

It does worry me that there are only "reports" at this point without any official Cal announcement. That tells me the ink isn't on the contract yet. I hope this wasn't a "fake news" leak.

No problem with how that plays out. Bottom line, let's get the fourth big man, then let them compete among themselves for the minutes allocated to the 4 and 5 spots.

well the org that reported this originally has now taken the post down, all that remains on google is the headline, so I suspect they had a premature prediction

Considering that Yeanay barely saw the floor at Grand Canyon before an injury ended his season, I'd be very concerned if he's starting at the beginning of the season.

He's an upside flier who we shouldn't expect to contribute this season IMO (and we can be pleasantly surprised if he is good enough to force his way into the rotation)

Working together toward getting an open shot is rapidly becoming just a distant memory of years gone by.

Your assessment is correct SFCB. That being said, it will be nice if we have four guys 6-8 or taller to fill the minutes allocated to the 4 and 5. Simple as that.

If Yeanay's not in your starting five, MB, then who is? Pretty much all of our transfers are unknowns without a lot of minutes on previous teams, so that's not the criteria. We just need to suspend judgment until the guys have battled it out in practice and the first few weeks of the season.

Based solely on experience our starting five would be Ames, Dorsey, Stojakovic, Petraitis, and Ilic. That lineup might be OK but I'm hoping a few of of the younger guys turn out to be better.

I know that sometimes it's just based on matchups, and love Petraitis' game, but quite often if he is our 4 that lineup you mention here seems very small.

Yes. Some of the younger guys (Pippen, Ruff, Yeanay, Dort) would add size. Maybe the next one or two as well.

I'm guilty of separating measurement of size by focusing in specifically on the 4 and 5 spots. Regardless of who's filling the 1 thru 3 spots, I like it when our two biggest guys out there are 6'8 or taller.

idle speculation

Camden had interest in GCU (per photo on website>?) maybe Sammie got a better offer at GCU so is staying and that left Camden for Cal

I apologize, anybody please help me out - does Camden take the final spot or is there one more left?

By my count in the standing roster thread we are at 15 with both Camden and Yeanay. But everything is day-to-day in this basketball universe.
RedlessWardrobe

Okay. The only thing left is that Camden and Pippen got official write ups as being officially transferred in, but Yeanay has not. If he backs out that would still leave the one spot, and I would think it has to be filled by a big.
