I saw this ad, and it took me on a little bit of an adventure.
At the end of the adventure, I realize that we merely to get 1 of our Cal Band Greats to script a song that plays and becomes super well know. SO well known, in fact, that everyone will be clamoring for it decades later.
And THIS is how we will land the recruits, right?
YesJohn Tesh is the composer of the iconic NBA on NBC theme song, "Roundball Rock." He wrote it in 1990, and it became one of the most recognizable sports themes in television history.
Tesh came up with the melody while in a hotel room in France covering the Tour de France. Without access to instruments, he called his answering machine back home and sang the tune so he wouldn't forget it. NBC selected it from six submissions, and it debuted during the 1990 NBA season opener between the Lakers and Spurs. It was played over 12,000 times during NBC's coverage from 1990 to 2002. Then NBC lost it's telecast rights and would only play the song during olympics.
But now they have the NBA back on NBC.
NBC has officially brought "Roundball Rock" back for its renewed NBA coverage starting in fall 2025, with John Tesh involved in the rollout. Thus the commercial.
