Who's the best pure outside shooter we've ever had? I should probably put one out there for you to top, but I'm sort of drawing a blank. Well, names are starting to come to me, but no one is standing out as number one, so some of you can name some names...

I take that back, here's a First Team (but I bet it could be enhanced... well maybe not the two bigs):

Ryan Anderson
Amit Tamir
Jordan Mathews
Ryan Drew
Theo Robertson

What say ye?

EDIT: Oh crap, I left off somebody pretty obvious. Had I only thought this through...

Can't argue with Mathews or Randle, but when Theo would square up it sure looked classic.

Maybe Russ Critchfield too. If he had the three point line - wow.

In addition to players mentioned, I'd put Bradley, Bird and Duck ahead of Tamir. If those guys got a clean look, it was going in.

What made Jerome Randle special is that he orchestrated and then hit many contested 3s during crunch time with our opponents totally focused upon stopping him

Theo Robertson shot 44%. His shot also looked the nicest. The argument is against is that he was low usage.

I think he could have been a 3 and D guy in the NBA if he stayed healthy. Too bad.

Yes. Crabbe deserves a mention too.

Crabbe's the guy I would've put on my list, except I forgot.

I love the junior-senior edition of Jerome Randle. Other junior-senior guys I like include Ayinde Ubaka and Keith Smith

Agreed, the only issue with Theo as a "pure shooter" is he was purely catch and shoot and took almost all of his shots when wide open from the same spot on the baseline. If a defender ran at him he would drive past them instead only dribbling with his right hand. It was a smart, effective, but two/dimensional strategy (I used do the same thing in pick up games, minus his ability to dunk).

He only averaged 1.2 Threes per game on his career but shot them at .440, again basically taking his favorite shot from the corner only when squared up and wide open. He did not make the list of all-time 3 pt % leaders because he did not have enough attempts.

Great name from the past (early '80s)! Played here two seasons at Cal, didn't get along with Kutchen and so transferred to Oral Roberts.

Agree, Theo was the 3rd or 4th option on that team and was a pure catch and shoot player

Still deserves mention but I'd go with Randle

I like Ryan Anderson's stroke the best. Randle while not as pure a shooter as Anderson was crazy good from long distance.

Best opponent I ever saw (at least in person) was Eddie House. That guy just shot lights out.

Lamond Murray had the prettiest shot.

My brother and I had good seats for the House show. Local boy came home and dropped 61 on us... from everywhere. It was amazing. That's right, I said 61

I know this is a Cal thread so watch this later lol

End of that game, we were wondering how many he got.

"I'm sure it was at least 40."
"I bet he might've gotten 50!"

Then the announcer said 61, Damn...

I saw that game. never seen any game so dominated by a guard.

My women's equivalent was when Alexis Gray Lawson dropped 37 of Cal's 57 points in an upset of highly ranked Stanford. Knocked in shots from anywhere. At one point Tara sent a three women "fence" around her, which failed to stop Alexis. She was the only Cal player with points in the last 10 minutes or so of the game.

Absolutely the prettiest stop on a dime, pull-up mid range J.

Ioanna Krimili may not have had the all around game of AGL but she could shoot. From anywhere inside the half court line.

For a single game how about Kristine Anigwe's 30 points and 30 rebounds at Washington State?

His shot was a thing of beauty...

The video quality isn't great u you can still the sweetness of Murray's shot, and hook, and dunks and whatever he wants..And wait for THE SHOT, so pretty. Also, several highlights showing what a menace Kidd was on defense, wow.

Oh and he also had spectacular jams including this one after the chase down block by Grigsby...

I think Murray had the sweetest shot in my Cal viewing days which goes back to Gene Ransom.
Honorable mention: Ed Gray's aborted senior year.

Randle's career stats are crazy: 45.4% overall, 50.9% on 2 pointers, 40.5% on 3 pointers, 88.1% from the line (93.3 as a senior); 18.4 points per game

Gene Ransom was an absolutely amazing player for Cal. So underrated. Loved watching him play. He was the hook that got me hooked into Cal basketball. And I mean hooked. Such a talent and treasure. What happened to him is horrific.

The 5 overtime game against Oregon where he played 63 of 65 minutes is etched in my brain. We were under the south basket in Harmon. Back then, no cell phones, couldn't phone home to tell Mom we were gonna be late, this was 1977, I think?

Another moment I remember from that game was Ray Murry sinking 2 free throws with very little time left to tie the game, I forget which OT it was, but it was right in front of me. Absolutely killer stuff by both these guys.

GO BEARS!!

This is cool, I have a similar story. Me and Pops were under South basket as well. Poor Mom was at home getting ready for work the next day. It was electric but I was young enough that I don't have a ton live action memories, more like still shot memories. Amazing game

TY. I was 17, it was amazing, and will never forget it, especially because I was with my Dad, and it was a Thursday night, so we got home around 1130-12, and Mom was 'where the hell did you go!' LOL.

I've told this apocryphal tale before about that five overtime game - because I did not witness it but it was talked about a lot at the radio station. KALX was broadcasting the game, which meant the DJ whose shift it was just sat at the board listening and being ready in case the feed got lost or for when the game ended. The late shift was 10pm to 2 am and the DJ for that shift came into the studio (then up at Lawrence Hall of Science) and a little upset that the game was still going on. and on. and on. and as the fourth overtime was winding down, he'd had enough and cut the feed as a shot was going up and said into the microphone "you'll never know" and then went and did his show.
