Playing that back at 0.25x normal speed I see the ND player's hand hit Ames right about the time he picks up his dribble, maybe a bit before. From that angle Ames' right hand is obscured by his body so it's hard to tell. Clearly after the contact Ames puts down his right foot, then his left foot, then rises for the shot. It looks like the contact was hard enough to knock Ames off balance so his footwork and shot were amazing.

Whatever the call I hate the idea of gaining an advantage by fouling. I'd like to see any non-shooting defensive foul result in one free throw then possession of the ball with the inbounds play at the spot of the foul

IMO the rule should be: Any defensive foul outside the 3-point circle in the last minute of the game (or the last minute of any overtime period) results in 3 free throws for the player who was fouled.

This isn't even close, 100% continuation. If this was an NBA game we wouldn't be having this conversation. What Dai Dai did - feel the tap and go straight into his shooting motion, a smart basketball play - is something Steph Curry has done a thousand times in his career. Take the buzzer beater and move on.
It would be more fun to talk about why the ND coach made a homicidal run toward the ref when the clock struck 0.0.

Where exactly is this magical "everybody gets 3 free throws" zone? Between the 3-pt line and what? Worst idea since bringing back the mullet.

Did ND have a foul to give and were they trying to foul the shooter prior to the 3pt attempt?

Yes, tried and failed earlier in the play. If you're going to intentionally foul in this new no-call era you better hug the guy.

Looking at the video of the ND coach chasing the ref after the game - he wasn't the only one being held back. One of his players (coaches son?) was going after the ref and was restrained. Probably should be two reprimands.

Continuation rule is new to college basketball this year. I am sure all coaches are aware of this change, included ND coach. Love it or hate it, it played a huge roll in the win.

So if Cal is down 1 or 2 points, and the other team has the ball it only has to keep the ball from crossing the arc? Force Cal to foul the other team behind the three point line and lose on free throws? That's exactly what your suggestion will cause..

Amazing. Thanks for this is conduct unbecoming of a coach. Notre dame should do something.

This is a good angle of it:

I also thought at first that the original swipe (well before the shot) should have been the foul, but on replay all he gets is a bit of jersey. Understandable that this wasn't called. The hit on the back happens right as he gathers for the shot. Continuation for the and-one is a fair call there.

The ND coach should have been mad at his *player* for not fouling well before Ames was shooting. I'm surprised he wasn't suspended for going after the ref.

Maybe he didn't get close enough. Or maybe Madsen put in a good word for him. I'm OK with it.

No contact made, no need for official action, but an apology for the unprofessional behavior should be a requirement. Imagine if you came to work and lost it that way, would there be any consequences? Of course, at least an uncomfortable conversation with HR.

#5 - Certa went after TWO officials and had to be restrained by a teammate. Make your free throws Mr. God's Gift to Free Throws and it doesn't come down to what happened. He was also one of the ND players that grabbed his head incredulously every time a foul was called on the ND team throughout the game. What a whiner!

One of the things that I missed a few times is how devestating the behind the back-cross over was in that it didn't allow the guy to do what he wanted to do - FOUL. It really was a masterfully drawn up play as it allowed Dei Dei to get a full head of steam and make the foul in the backcourt more difficult to pull off.

I still think we got away with one, as there were 3 separate potential fouls that could have been called.

I think the fault lies with ND's head coach, who didn't change up his defensive strategy after the previous Ames' 3-pointer on the prior Cal possession. The ND player Imes was way too slow to guard Ames. ND's ballistic coach elected to keep the Imes kid in the game instead of subbing in a clearly much faster defender named Zachary. No clue why he'd put a slow defender on Ames not once but twice in a row.

The very polite ND fans seated beside me slipped out quietly right after ND's final attempt. It was glorious.
