UPDATED April 16
OK, the portal is about to close (April 21)… so it's time to figure out what the roster will look like in six months. I'll try to keep the OP updated with new information, post all rumors, innuendoes and other portal chatter.

Cal 2026-27 Roster - 15 scholarships available, 4 remaining

In the Portal:
Rytis Petraitis - F - 6'7" 215 lbs Gr.

Transferred:
Justin Pippen - G - 6'3" 190 lbs Jr. to Ohio State
Dai Dai Ames - G - 6'2" 190 lbs Sr. to Tennessee

From the Portal:

Nojus Indrusaitis - G - 6'5" Jr. from Pitt
Michael Cooper - G - 6'3" 185 lbs from Wright St.
Jacob Wilkins - SF - 6'9" 185 lbs from Georgia

Incoming Freshmen
Nicolas Mitrovic - PF/C - 7'0" 210 lbs Fr.
Dionycius Bakare - F - 6' 5" 190 lbs. Fr.

From last year's roster:

Lee Dort - F - 6'10" 235 lbs Gr.
Jovani Ruff - G - 6'5" 205 lbs So.
Semetri (TT) Carr - G - 6'1" So.
Dhiaukuei Manyiel Dut - F - 7'0" 210 lbs Jr.
Mantas Kocanas - C - 6'11" 240 lbs Jr.
Sammie Yeanay - F - 6'9" 240 lbs Jr.

Walkons
BJ Fisher - G - 6'1" 180 lbs Jr.
Stephon Marbury II - G - 6'1" 170 lbs Jr.
Jorell Clark - G - 6'2" 180 lbs So.
Luke Butler - G - 6'4" 180 lbs So.

Thanks for the update. 4 roster spots open. Rytis a possible return. Still hoping for one true point guard and another big body up front. Hope something breaks soon.

Hopefully Wadley commits to Cal for 2026

Hmm, I wonder if the Ross commitment helps with Wadley, given that Ross also went to Compass Prep… granted, they're a few years apart, but do they know each other? At least maybe they have coaches in common who know Madsen & Co.?

I wonder how much of a target he still is for BYU since they have retained their PG Rob Wright, spent a lot of money to bring in Collin Chandler from Kentucky and signed a top Juco combo guard and one of the best high school wings.

Looks like Oregon is also interested and they have A LOT of need and playing time in the backcourt having lost Shelstad and only picked up Jasper Johnson.

I love this approach to reporting and Kudos to Faraduo of tracking down beat writers that covered the incoming players. These writes ups make me happy.

Take care of your Chicken

The only thing that has closed is the ability for players to ENTER the portal. Transfers and changes in rosters is still ongoing.

Did you have a specific update in mind? Should be current… 4 scholarships left, let's see what Mad Dog can come up with.

Updating with the Amier's transfer…. 3 schollies to go. Intuit I suspect the rest of the roster gets filled in 3 weeks, but it depends on a lot of X-factors.

Anyone know if Madsen is looking at overseas players? Seems like a vein we should be mining.

earlier posts intimated Madson was more than looking for overseas talent, he was actively recruiting a coveted PF. Hopefully that goal remains priority ONE.

I found this interesting, of the Top 100 committed portal recruits, only FIVE are going to West Coast schools. We are not alone in our battle for funding. No Cal, Stanford, Gonzaga, SDSU, Santa Clara, etc.

33. KJ Lewis USC
35. Eric Reibe USC
42. Jaylen Petty UCLA
58. LeJuan Watts UW
99. Jasper Johnson Oregon

Interesting. I have to think state income tax plays at least some part in these decisions.

And, how many of the top 100 portalites can spell "tax"?

I am very certain the players are looking at the top line number only. They are not looking at tax rates, cost of living, etc. They might look at PT, coaching, teammates, Tournament chances, brand, and maybe school and a fun location.

If the different programs are doing their jobs, I guarantee schools in lower/no-income tax states are making the case about net income comparisons in their NIL deals. They would be idiotic not too. And cost of living would not be a factor - they still get school, meals, housing covered, etc. Obviously, that will be part of the decision alongside playing time, coaching, etc.

Everybody has an agent or paid professionals of some kind working on their behalf if the NIL money is above a certain level. Of course there is a "what you get" and a "what you get after taxes" number. Tax rate in CA is 9.3% on $200K, it's not a small amount.

and after taxes, there is the agent's fees. I don't know that the NIL people have any limits on what they take/charge. Professional player unions have caps.
