Recruit from high school only and be known for it. Requires more work but it is the only viable long term solution. If we begin to be good guys will have a foundation and loyalty as opposed to be travelling salesmen playing hard for the next check. Think about it are we that much better due to NIL players and look at the players who want to stay, high school recruits.

There is no alternative.

Why would they stay? They will get beaten up by guys 5 years older than them. After going 10 and 20 any with talent will grab the bag. Rinse and repeat.

The answer, at least in the short term, is to lean heavily on international players since they cannot accept NIL under current immigration laws. Cal has a great international reputation and the Bay Area is an attractive location for people from all over the world.

Other than that, Madsen has done a pretty good job finding "bargain" players.

I believe the top international players are also playing for the money (not the degree). It may not be NIL per se, but I'm confident many programs are finding their way around that.

Sure, but the NIL cannot come from the university. Cal has many international alums who can hire players for local jobs in the off season. For example, Cal basketball alum Richard Chang is the longtime President of Costco Asia with lots of corporate jobs and advertising in nearly every country in Asia.

The answer is money. There is no hack to this. If there was, others will do it too and it will come back to money.

I would say that without money the best you can do is get really good at scouting what players are about to blow up and get them for one year before they move on for more money. And also going full Moneyball on the situation. But again, others will learn from what you do and then apply money to it and beat you unless you apply equal money.

Which brings us back to the first rule which is the answer is money.

An international student athlete would be prohibited from earning money in the US, but not in his home country. A NIL contract could set him up with earnings in his home country (e.g., ads for a local car dealership in his hometown).
