Me too. But if he's leaving I hope the reason is we have better players coming in.

Bummer. A really easy player to root for.

I wonder if he looks for a higher usage mid major role?

We have no idea if players entering the Portal are leaving. The top players should all enter the Portal if only to give themselves options and leverage, even if their preference is to return. The only players that should not enter the Portal are players that know they are bench warmers at D1 and value the Cal scholarship and education so they don't want to enter the Portal and put that at risk.

Why is he doing this? Who would want him more than us?

Maybe he's graduated and wants a bigger role for his last year.

Maybe he wants to leave his options open as he finds out who Cal will have and what his role will be?

If Pippen is worth $3 million, he must be able to demand $1 million! Just need to raise another $300,000 for the Challenge Grant and we can keep him! It's like the Oprah show - everyone gets a million. A million for you. A million for you. Everyone's a millionaire! Welcome to NCAA basketball!

If Pippen is worth $3 Million and not even in the top 40, then everyone should go into the portal as the crazies are spending like mad

It's going to keep going like this until schools take a stand and refuse to do things that don't make economic sense. Because these things don't make economic sense. Basketball doesn't make money for Cal and it isn't going to make any significant money under the current circumstances without significantly surpassing any reasonable expectations for success, and then it probably still won't make significant money. Barring Cal becoming a perennial Elite 8 participant, the ROI is not close to there. So the cost is being incurred for nonmonetary reasons. I don't think Cal is alone in this. In fact, I think Cal is the norm.

At some point, schools have to stop the ridiculous dream that they can become elite and look at the bluebloods and say "You do you. If you can afford millions of dollars for role players, have at it. We'll accept the left overs" or just walk away from the endeavor altogether.

Are there enough crazy, rich sports fans to pay $3M to every journeyman D-1 player?

A few are still hoping for that Whale to surface, and buy a good team for a year.

1) Do you think the same logic holds for football?
2) For a FEW schools it does. I am working on a report so will pick up later but the Boise State effect is real and so if you really want to increase enrollment (or have to - tOSU) or wish to increase selectivity it is a pretty cost effective investment. But that isn't the case for Cal. I would argue that Cal and UCLA actually need LESS applicants because admission rates in the low teens hurt it in Sacramento with the legislature.

I'll boo him every game regardless. You think it's about money for Pippen? His dad spends 3 mil on his private jets just to go to Justin's games, why would a million here or there matter to someone with that kind of privilege?
The only players we could expect to be loyal to a team or a coach are the rich kids, but I guess not.
