I can't imagine NOT starting Daubaris (might be the best player on the team?). He's the 4.

Mitrovic is a 17 yr old skinny Freshman. I don't see him pushing DORT out of the starting lineup.

I can. In fact, we all should try to imagine it because with Dort taking all the minutes at center I see no tournament in our near future. Do the homework and watch the highlights, Mitrovic is 19 in a couple months, not 17, and he's going to be 3X better than Dort (I don't know if that happens in his first year, but we have to hope).
Good to know about Daubaris being a must-start (Mitrovic and him are the same age, by the way), but I can't say that 11 PPG in U18 Euro-ball really proves it, he'll have to show it against real competition here.
https://www.fiba.basketball/en/players/342144-dominykas-daubaris

It is not clear if you are responding to my WAG about Daubaris or Mitrovic. And the OP post was about starting, not ALL of the minutes or most. I agree that Mitrovic needs to contribute and that we cannot rely on DORT 100% at the 5 (I don't believe anyone one said that).

IF Mitrovic can start over DORT - that means he is that good - since DORT has proven he is at least a competent ACC Center. And that would be good news. But my expectations are not that high on Mitrovic (but hopeful)

As for his age, I was going by what the BI Moderators stated in comparing Mitrovic to Kocanas. I have not attended any of the birthday parties to confirm.

Bumping this, since I just watched Rod B's preview of Mitrovic. Agree with alot of Rod's caveats about limited and older tape as well as the competition.

It is pretty clear (barring injuries, etc) that Mitrovic would NOT start over DORT. However, Rod got me pretty excited about what could happen with some good coaching and individual development.

Unlike his predecessors (maybe going all the way back), Madsen seems to have a pretty good grasp on what type of players are best for his system and getting really good fits at a good value - which is such a huge part of the current state of Cal MBB (and all MBB outside of the top 15).

I seem to appreciate Madsen more and more each season. That is a pretty important metric. Not as important as WINNING, but even Monty was getting stale and seemed tired after a few seasons (he was also dealing with health issues - no knock on Monty). Braun stuck around too long, Martin was mostly ONE great recruiting class and phhht. Pretty much everyone else since Kuchen had us hoping for a replacement before the end of their first season (for different reasons).

Yeah, Madsen is doing a pretty good job given the situation. Given that Knowlton extended him through 2029, we realistically have this season and the next to decide if we might be able to do better. If his teams continue to improve every year, the consensus will be to extend him. As I said in another thread, I think a big factor will be his ability to engage donors and fans to support the program. Winning is a good way to do that.

Since Madsen is sending Dort and Ross to the ACC Tipoff event in Charlotte, let's say they are in the starting 5.
So how about:
Ross
Ali
Indrusaitis
Daubaris
Dort

Real size in front, experienced ball handler in back, a couple of ballers and we have a team.

Dort, Ross and Nojus are locks

Not sure about the 3 and 4

Looks good but may be Yeanay for Daubaris for more physicality and more
experience generally and more experience specifically with Mark's system

If Yeanay could be a kind of Andre Kelly, which is what I originally hoped, I would say yes, but the few times I saw him play last year did not impress.

The clips I've seen of Yeanay suggest he's a wildly different player from Andre Kelly.

Not sure if you're trying to be purposely obtuse there or what, but I'm not saying that Yeanay and Kelly have the same style. I'm saying one was a big body who made a major impact every game for the Bears, especially in the paint, and the other has about the same big body (6'9" 250 lbs) but has shown no impact so far. Like everyone else I'm hoping Yeanay shows a different level this year than what he did last year, but haven't seen evidence of that other than hopeful fan posts.

I don't see the resemblance. Kelly came in a bit overweight and wasn't particularly athletic. Yani looks like he has an NBA body. Based solely on body types, Kelly was an overachiever and due to injury Yani has been an underachiever so far.

If you're saying you are hoping Yeanay gives us 10-12 pts, 6-7 boards playing the 4…sure, I guess I'd be happy with that. But they are different players, different bodies, different skillsets so I would expect those 10-12 points would come in different ways.

Kelly was a skilled back to the basket player

Sami likes to face up and shoot or drive (and seems to like spin moves)

Completely different players, but if the point is points, rebounds and defense results then yay… hope Sami can match Andre's box score

Yes, you finally got the point. Yeanay has 15 career games at 1.6 PPG, and Andre has 5 seasons, 9PPG, who cares about NBA body types (whatever that means) or what kind of skillset or style a player happens to prefer to use? Follow what the coach tells you to do and get your 9 PPG posting, shooting, standing on your head, whatever works for the team, not what "Sam likes to do." I see a lot of selfishness built into this NIL system. And often the fans buy into it "He's this kind of guy or that kind of guy", etc. Just win, and play for the team.

Will we have any pre season exhibition games on ESPN+ this year? Just watched full game Georgetown vs. Wake Forest on same and it was great to see what both teams had with recruitment and transfer portal...Would love to see Cal do same...

Yes it was HoopDreams....I was shocked when someone said on their fan board about the game earlier yesterday. It had been downloaded by the time I got there and was such a surprise...

I loved Andre Kelly:
  • He recognized his strengths, and made them a focus (EDIT - his jump-hook was money!)
  • He improved his game to address the problems he had with more athletic opponents
  • Though not blessed with a great body, he got himself in shape
And near as I could tell, he did this all without any appreciable big-man coaching from Fox's laughably inept staff. While Yeanay has a different game, he could do a lot worse than to follow Kelly's approach.

LOL, who is being obtuse now?

You made the comparison. If everyone that responded misunderstood it then it's not their fault.
