Local talent, keep 'em home! Great decision Oscar, as your family and friends will continue to enjoy your game. Kudos to Coach Martin and staff, and hope this is a beginning of a fruitful relationship with the Soldiers.

Great get for CM! It really starts with protecting your backyard and he's off to a nice start.

Really nice pickup for Cal, though not too surprising, even this early.

Here's a quick story with stats and highlights, with more to come tomorrow: http://bearinsider.com/news/story.php?article=1147

That's the elephant in the room.

But welcome to Cal, Oscar! We couldn't be more excited to have you on board as a Golden Bear!

How can you not be impressed with what Cuonzo and staff have done in such a short period of time? I can't imagine a better hire for our program. The future looks very bright with CM & Co.

I can't believe _I_ am typing this but patience is the watch word of the day. Monty left some holes in the front court. Rooks ACL didn't help (but I also am not sure that, in the end, that won't be a silver lining as he can work on getting bigger, fitter and a good year of school without distractions. I expect us to have some pains next year. But compared to the old approach, which in the end I think reflected being of a much older generation, I love the energy, excitement and youthfulness of our MONSTER STAFF. Now if we could just go find a similar coach for gridiron in about 4 months when Sonny goes bye bye.

I agree. We need to have realistic expectations for next year but it'll be nice to see how Cuonzo and staff meander through the challenges and reboot the program. I am seriously excited.

I think you have the right title for your next thread, "MONSTER STAFF", CUZ they are bringing it!

Monty got commitments from players ranked in the 60's before for Cal. The problem was too many Plan C guys.

My comment was based on Monty's poor relationships with the Oakland Soldiers and his aversion to recruiting from their ranks.

All of Cal's decent prospects play AAU basketball. Your complaint is more specifically with the lack of Oakland Soldiers that came to Cal. My concern is more with getting more Top 50 talent into the program. Getting 50-100 talent into the program has not been a problem, even in the Monty years.

I've amended my post to better articulate my point. Of course, you are correct. Quality depth has been the issue.

Frayer is # 25 in Scout's initial 2016 rankings:

He has slipped to #45 in Scout's current rankings and he is not in ESPN's Top 60. Reality check for the board.

East coast bias. I am sure he will drop further now that committing to Cal and not a "blue chip" program.

Going to say it again, there is NO WAY the economics (what would be the revenue stream????!!???) supports an objective and systematic evaluation of these players. How could you have HUNDREDS of scouts, on payroll, to go out and grade these guys and distinguish between #59 and #61? Heck, I doubt they have money for Freeconferenceall.com to get the guys together to grade out and set the rankings. Just impossible....and about a NANOSECOND of thinking about how you would try to pay an Orinda mortgage with Scout's business model brings it starkly home.

So lets be in the right ball park. Oscar is likely in Bird-like. A great recruit. Top 10 kid? No. That is Rabb. But you can do JUST FINE AND DANDY in today's NCAA with a roster of Bird like players. Monty's problem, as noted above, was too many plan C kids because rather than land 2 or 3 Bird-level kids we were hitting 1 ever 2 years.

Reality Check? Top 45 is still excellent and his sophomore highlight video tells me all I need to know about our new ultra-athletic wing.

Watch the video for yourself, I don't remember many wings with this kind of bounce heading to Cal recently. and

It's easy to see why he just missed averaging 4 blocks a game as a wing.

Which makes dropping 20 places all the more unlikely. Should he go back to being in the top 25 and pick up a 5th star like Bird you can bet this board will be even more giddy.

IMO, the best news from this pickup is that Cal has once again tapped into the Soldier's program.

I call BS on your BS call. Monty offered and maybe he signs him this early or maybe not. Given Monty's recruiting history at Cal and his relationship to the Soldiers, I don't believe he would've.

Regardless, Cuonzo did sign him early and according to Jim's article it was explicitly because of how comfortable Frayer and his AAU coach were with THIS staff.

I call double BS, no take backs, no reversies!

I can't quote what I read because it's on a competing site, but it seemed to indicate that he was seriously considering us under the previous staff.

I don't doubt that we were in his top 5 under the previous regime. Seen that before...
