Beavs aren't a great team and we should be the favorite. They even lost to Coppin State (who we blew out) early in the season. But it's still a dangerous game on the road and OSU has gotten a better recently:
- key player Moreland finally back just a couple games ago after missing whole OOC schedule and finally in groove with 17 points/15 boards against Furd... they are a different team with him.
- Freshman guard Cooke working his way into starting role, getting more minutes, and Beavs look better with him IMO

Completely different opponent than Ducks. Goofy zone (will need Powers more), way more length with Moreland and Brandt.

Should be noted that the Coppin St. game we were missing BOTH Moreland and Collier, arguably two of the most important players on the team. Still inexcusable, but, just sayin'.....

If I had a dollar for every time a Cal BB team dicktripped in a game like this, I'd be a rich man. It's almost a Cal tradition.

This is my worry as well. I hope Mathews plays as efficiently (PER, not necessarily ppg) in this game as he did at the Mathews Night Arena.

I also hope that the rest of the team maintains their same level of play. If so, we should be in good shape.

With Monty at the helm, though, I'm sure he'll keep the team focused and they'll come out on fire. (Besides, Solo and Cobbs are showing great team leadership this year--I highly doubt they'll allow the team to overlook or underestimate the Cleaver clan).

Pretty much this. I'd be happy with a win regardless of the margin but wouldn't lose sleep over a loss.

Oregon State is great at looking like crap in non-conference play and then turning it on for Pac-12 teams. Don't be surprised if they beat us in Corvallis.

Cal is currently a 2 point favorite over toOSU.

Fair enough. I hope you noticed that in much of the rest of my post, I was actually saying good things about OSU and how they are improved now relative to earlier in the season.

As several on this thread have pointed out, a Cal loss/OSU win would actually be very predictable, though technically an upset.

Yup, I saw that. I think you're right, we're a lot better with Hallice Cook now in the lineup. That said, I watched Cal last night, and they looked way better than I was expecting them to look. They're the better team, clearly with the better coach, and I would expect them to win. I just hope the good OSU shows up and plays inspired defense...if they do, at home, maybe they have a chance.

Moreland, Collier, and Roberto Nelson are the makings for a solid Pac12 team. (Moreland made the all-Pac12 defensive team last season.) With sub-par coaching, they're likely to be inconsistent. The Beav's beat Maryland early this season in College Park.

If the rodents bring their A game, and we come out flat, we'll probably lose. Let's hope we catch them on an average or off night.

They were probably nervous in front of the POTUS during their Akron game.

Back in the 60s (before AIDs, etc) we had the best yell in the Pac 8: "Trojan or Bear, Bare of course"…..Now OSU owns that: "Save a Trojan, Lick a Beaver". Nasty, but clever.

ps….I did clean it up a bit, not much

Anyone else feeling a little anxious about playing at Corvallis tonight? I fear some over-confidence and lack of focus like happened at Santa Barbara. Even fans on BI are more gloating over the big win at Eugene than looking at the important game today. Monty has a challenge on his hands keeping the young team on course. We are still very thin and one injury or foul-out away from disaster. :gobears:

Actually, that's not true (or rather it is true of the football team, but not the basketball). Last year they were 10-4 OOC and 4-14 in conference; the year before, they were 14-3 and 7-11. It is true that we have had some bad games against them, but overall, they tend to collapse in the P12.

Obviously, we all should be anxious. It's a P12 road game, the second of the weekend, and after an emotional win. OTOH, we have a chance to go 3-0, all on the road. Hopefully, Monty has them fired up.

I respect OSU and thing we absolutely can't be too proud of ourselves with the win over the ducks.

OSU is almost the mirror opposite of Oregon.

OSU has a good and experienced front court:

6-8 Senior Devon Collier who averages 8 boards and 16 pts
6-10 Senior Angus Brandt with 12 pts, 5 rebounds
6-10 Junior Moreland 9 boards and 8 pts
Backing these 3 up are two more 6-10 sophs that play about 10 minutes/game

Are there any more bigger, more athletic, more experienced front courts in the conference, besides AZ (who are considerably younger)?

And we can't just collapse in the paint. Primarily due to Roberto Nelson who is leading the conference is scoring, and is an all-around great player. He went off for 25 pts last year in our first game, where we won in a close game. Maybe Monty figured him out a little as he was only 3-10 for 10 pts in the second game, although Cal only won by 1 pt.

We were out rebounded in both games, although their C Burton who hurt us on the boards both games, has moved on. That's good news, because we had no answer for him in either game

Allen Crabbe had terrible offensive games, but the good news is Cobbs was our best player in both games

Yeah, but last year's 10-4 mark included a loss to Towson.

The year before that, their 14-3 mark included a loss to Idaho.

Point is, they tend to take some big RPI-killing loss in OOC and then win enough games in the Pac to be a nuisance (though I'll grant that last year's 4-14 mark wasn't really damaging to the other conference teams). Thankfully, we did not take a loss tonight! Great start to the conference slate with 3 road wins!
