It was a very good year. Great that we won conference for the first time in my lifetime. Great for JR and that whole team. But that crown led a lot of guys to miss that the EARLY MM years at Cal had a big flaw - the lack of sheer athletic talent able to play through contact and to create their own shots when in isolation at the end of the clock - skills critical as the season goes along and refs start to "let em play" and when you have 24 hours max to scout and develop a specific game plan,

What alot of people here don't get is the vast upgrade in that skill between, say, Justin, Wallace, Bird and Mathews over JR, Patrick, Joreg and Knezevic. Not taking away anything from those guys...and they all had fun skills....but the were not of the sheer athletic ability and one on one skill of our current starting guards/wings.

Jorge would start for this team. Christopher would play ahead of Kreklow and probably ahead of Wallace. I would love to have Randle on this team, the junior or senior version.

What you call the early MM years were really him taking over what was left of Braun's players and making them far better than they had been, but having to deal with an awful class imbalance and the results of Cal pretty much sucking for a few years before. And yeah, he had to change his approach to recruiting and stop relying on old guys like John before he started improving things. But

Forgetting Boykins?

He was our post in the championship year where we beat Louisville and lost to Duke.

He was a skilled post but undersized. Boykins and Kamp were similar players. Skilled, high hoops IQ, great team players, but undersized

Markuri was a marginal player his first year, but after working hard to lose weight became an unstoppable force in the block. He would be a great future Cal coach due to his leadership

Jorge as a Sophomore? Doubtful. Christopher probably plays ahead of Ricky but I am not sure ahead of Wallace or Bird. Almost guaranteed because of the defensive liabilities Jerome doesn't start ahead of Cobbs.

Chris Hernandez.

The 'furds were not relevant prior to Knight. After that they had three seasons where Monty filled the pg spot with a stop-gap senior (Mosley, McDonald, and Barnes).

Was Lichti a pg? I wasn't following college hoops back then.

Lichti was a 6'4" shooting guard (listed as a guard/forward). Monty's starting PG for three years was Terry Taylor who was an engineering student and now sells real estate in San Diego: LINK. The 1986 team with Lichti (for example) started three bigs: Howard Wright, Eric Reveno and Greg Butler (Dave Butlers bigger, but less talented younger brother) whose main job was to rebound and set screens for Lichti.

Unstoppable against really the worst Pac-12 talent of the past 30 years. Again, great guy and happy warrior but not upper level talent.

Boykins and Harper were really good guys but neither (especially with Harper playing on one knee) better than Solo at the PF.

That's arguable with Harper. If you are counting this one year with Solo - maybe. Harper played 4 years of high level ball right from the get-go. He was a superb passer, very good shooter, and had great recognition of what was needed. His knee injuries hampered him, but he used smarts to overcome it.

Chris Hernandez didn't have huge stats, but I'd put him right there with Cobbs. His intangibles were elite, better than Cobbs has shown thus far, IMO.

You beat me to it! Hernandez was a great and clutch colllege point guard.

I believe he never missed a shot ever against us. You can check the stats all you want, but I am sticking with this story.

Plus Harper didn't often miss large chunks of games sitting on the bench because of silly fouls and he made his FTs. You can't help your team much sitting on the pine. There are a lot of games left to play yet this year so much can happen still.:headbang

I completely understand your memory. I used to hate the guy as a Cal fan, while admiring the way he killed us.

In a way he seemed to be a sadist, who always would twist the knife in us, when it appeared there might be hope...

If he had been a Bear we would all love him.

Go Bears!
