I've never used ESPN3 before. How do I get the game tomorrow? I have Comcast cable and Internet at home. I don't use a smartphone. Thanks.

To see ESPN3 online go to http://espn.go.com/watchespn/

I recently read that on March 3 Disney and DISH reached a major agreement, which includes adding ESPN3 to the DISH line-up, showing both ESPNU and ESPNews in HD and much more, but I do not believe that the new offerings are available yet.

Ah, so that's why I now get ESPNU and ESPNWS in HD. Thanks!

It's an internet channel. See link above. You need to log in with your uverse info.

It's also not very good, which seems appropriate.

If you want to watch it on your HDTV, the simplest solution is probably to buy an Apple TV box. They run about $100. Works very well. You open the WatchESPN app and enter your cable company's login information.

There are other solutions, of course, but I've been happy with the Apple TV.

There is also Google Chromecast for $35.

It looks tricky: http://thestreamingadvisor.com/2014/01/16/you-can-watch-plex-espn-and-use-the-google-chromecast-as-a-presentation-device-with-experimental-full-screen-cast-feature/

If money is a concern, you could always try and find a place that accepts returns without a restocking fee.

The watch espn app doesn't natively support chromecast (yet?) so you would have to tab cast it as described in the link 13 posted. It's actually very simple but the stream quality is not typically as good as with natively supported apps. Also I'm not sure if chromecast is sold at best buy, etc. so out might not be possible to get one by tonight like you could with an apple TV or roku.

It looks like Staples, Bestbuy, and I think Fry's all carry the Chromecast. I just tried mine, and the tab cast worked fine, although the picture is not perfect HD.

But your post reminded me to try my Roku. The Roku works great with Watch ESPN, and the picture looks somewhat better than using the Chromecast with tab casting. But the picture with Chromecast tab casting looks pretty darn good also.

Before we hijack this thread completely, another option to watch tonight would be to just use an HDTV as a monitor by plugging it in with a VGA or DVI cable (if your TV has a port) or hdmi (if your computer has a port).

So the main options are:

1) go to espn.go.com/watchespn on your laptop or computer, sign in, watch on computer screen

2) install watch espn app on your phone or tablet, open it, sign in, watch on your phone or tablet screen

3) plug your laptop or computer into your TV using appropriate cable, then follow steps in #1 to watch on TV screen (this method might require adjustment of your computer's display settings and might not work on all computers, particularly old ones)

4) use another device like a chromecast, roku,, apple TV, etc. to stream the game to your TV

All of these methods will require that you subscribe to espn with a participating TV provider so you can authenticate (for example, directv does not participate, so you can't authenticate if you have DirecTV even if you subscribe to espn on your TV)

Now, on to the hijack:

Cal Geek and others:

Have you used plex with your chromecast to stream from a nas now that it's supported? If so, what nas? I'm about to build a freenas box...

Have you purchased and used the sling app with your roku? I'm particularly interested in the stream quality from a dish hopper w/ sling to a roku running the sling app.

Wondering generally about people's experiences with stream quality from these options, as they are my next likely forays.

Also, anyone build a dvr using the mythbuntu distro? I might do one of those soon too. Would love to hear experiences.

Have no experience with any of these.
1. Does "sling app" require a slingbox?
2. Not at all familar with using "plex" to stream from nas, nor freenas box.
3. Not at all familar with mythbuntu distro.

Ok, thanks.

Yeah sling makes a paid app, compatible with roku (not sure which versions) among others, that will "connect" with a sling box or hopper w/ sling. So if you get a sling device in one place (say, your primary residence) and a roku running the sling app in another (say,a vacation house) you can sling the sling device content (live tv, recordings, everything) to the vacation house TV via the roku. So in theory you only need 1 tv subscription (both locations need internet) and with the new Hoppers sling is integrated,.so again theoretically everything should work as well as possible. But sling relies on your ISP upload and download speed through your modem/router, so I was wondering about stream quality. I've heard people say sling streams are "pretty good" in the past, but to me there's a big difference in acceptable quality streaming to a laptop vs a 60" HDTV.

Plex lets you stream media from a home server to chromecast.

Mythbuntu is just an open source dvr. I might build one to record over the air networks if I can ditch cable/satellite in one location and use apps to watch HBO, espn, p12 because network apps tend to suck and I have no interest in paying for hulu plus our something similar. This is kind of a contingency depending on how good the sling stream turns out to be.

You don't necessarily need a participating TV provider. You can get ESPN3 access with a participating TV or internet provider. For instance, I have DirecTV for TV and Comcast for internet. DirecTV does not authenticate for WatchESPN or ESPN3. However, I am able to watch ESPN3 content either on the espn website or on the watchespn apps on roku, appletv, my iphone or ipad by using my comcast internet credentials. (This would not work for non espn3 content on the watchespn apps.) As long as you have a fast internet connection, the game on roku or appletv should look HDTV quality. (Maybe not as smooth as a telecast but pretty damn good.)

The sling app on the roku (works with the newer generation of rokus) is free, but it requires you to have a sling app on your phone or tablet (not free) that basically works as a remote control for the roku sling app. You open the sling app on your phone or tablet and there's a "play on roku" button. If you have enough upload speed where your slingbox is and enough download speed where the roku is (I think the stream maxes out at about 8 mbps), the stream looks almost HDTV quality, even on a large TV.

Exactly what I was hoping to hear. 8mbps shouldn't be a problem. Thanks, dude.

Watching via airplay on an appletv (the sling app is airplay enabled) also looks very good.

it appears that I can't get WatchESPN in London, even though my DISH subscription is active....
It's not like the game is starting at 2:30 a.m. - oh, it is.
Well, if I'm awake, I can follow twitter and other online resources.
