How long do you want to ignore this user?
This thread is, of course only relevant in the case that Monty actually retires. Why the heck would he need a meeting on his future, I and everybody else asks?

I'll start the list off with an obvious one:

Gregg Marshall Pros: seems a lot like a younger version of Monty, same career path. This would be his first BCS school. Cons-Likely same reason as Chris Peterson spurning us-too many intangibles that would make winning here harder on him. Also, is he really a decent recruiter?

Dayton and Archie Miller announced a contract extension last week. But that won't keep other schools from pursuing him, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Sunday.

"He'll still get some calls," said one source.

Sources told CBSSports.com that Wake Forest and possibly Marquette are expected to reach out to Miller, one way or another, to see if he'd be interested in relocating after three years at Dayton. A source close to Miller reiterated to CBSSports.com on Sunday that the 35-year-old Pennsylvania native is happy at Dayton and definitely not looking to parlay postseason success into a new job. But that same reality didn't stop Wake Forest and Marquette from reaching out to VCU's Shaka Smart, and it won't prevent Miller from being pursued, either.

Wake Forest fired Jeff Bzdelik on March 20.

Buzz Williams left Marquette for Virginia Tech on March 21.

Those two jobs are widely considered to be the top jobs currently open.

1. Played for Monty.
2. Pac 12 experience as a HC. Also coached at Montana.
3. IMO was Coach of the Year with what he did at Utah after last year.
4. Is not a Mormon.
5. NBA experience as a 10 year player. Still young enough to relate.
6. He would be more than interested in the job....

Would definitely chat with both Larry and with Howland.

The REALLY almost impossible thing to know is whether Howland recruited talent or whether it was the UCLA brand and talent came DESPITE Ben. The upside really is that cal will NEVER outrecruit Zona or UCLA. In many ways that is the same position Pitt was vis-a-vis Syracuse and UCONN. What Ben did there was feed the chip on the shoulder attitude to ridiculous levels. The interesting (unknown?) question is whether he could do it at Cal.

Flip side - he could be damaged goods post UCLA meltdown with recruits and AAU crowd. You simple have to do LOTS of homework there to understand the undercurrents.

Again, buyers market - I think we can make a good hire. And again, Monty did right by CAL by giving Sandy an internal candidate in TD.

I have soured. I think he is the same place as Dawkins - Harvard recruits DESPITE the head coach. We need a guy (Howland, for example) with a track record of succeeding both in recruiting and on the court while being a second cousin to power programs in a conference.

No. He'll be Ben Braun redux with bad offense, and with lesser athletes than what he had at ucla.

Agree. He out recruits everyone in the Ivy League but was underwhelming at Seton Hall and Michigan. Steve Donahue at Cornell was the Ivy flavor of the year a few years ago when he got them to the sweet 16. He just got canned at Boston College. Same problem.

Howland is one guy I would NOT want to see considered. Get me someone younger, more dynamic, ready to hit the recruiting trail who doesn't have all that baggage.

I think Howland is an exceptional coach but don't see him here. He'd be great at Wake Forest or Marquette.

I would guess that Howland is off the table with his history. I think we will never out recruit arizona or UCLA. So we need a coach who can really coach well, and hopefully is a better recruiter than Montgomery. This is a tall order, especially for a place that does not have the basketball cred of those schools, and has high academic standards. I'm concerned.

My pipe dream is Shaka Smart from VCU. IN general I'd like a younger type who has a lot of energy and can relate to recruits and the recruiting world. Cleanly.

I mentioned it (twice). I think he is an outstanding "internal" candidate. But you do the program a disservice if you don't see who else out there is interested.

recruiting is on the uptick since he moved up to first chair, and I think he would recruit even better as the Head Coach.

You are showing your youth. He struggled at UCLA - in large part because 5 stars will NOT - in all but the rarest circumstances - buy into a system that demands in your face defensive on ball pressure. But at Pitt his teams were amazing to watch. They played with a huge amount of intensity on the defensive side of the rock and just frustrated the "crap" out of teams.

Again, the unknowable (by us) is how Ben is seen by the audience that matters - recruits, players, AAU types. If he is damaged, move on. If he is not, then I think you simply have to make a call to feel him out and talk about stuff.

Why would a program in a major conference hire a head coach whose only HC experience is at a community college? Too much of a gamble

Would love to get pastner.

How bout Jamie Dixon - Cali guy.
Jay wright - remember hearing he was interested before Monty. I think his sister lives here, married to frank Somerville?

I think that's probably off the mark, but the idea of hiring a guy who hasn't ever been even a top assistant is even more so. Decuire would be a risk, but at least he's had some HC experience at the JC level, and I would only consider that if there were player relationships that really mattered involved.

Rumors are that John Montgomery didn't contribute much in terms of coaching (mediocre, but not terrible), but contributed absolutely nothing in terms of recruiting. Given that recruiting is where we've been lacking, I think it's not too unreasonable to say.
