Lots of posts discussing our choices in our next coach. Discussing the talent pool seems like a fools errand since it is pretty clear that finding the right person is difficult to predict. I instead would rather we get the contract right. In my mind it is all about the buyout. We need options and flexibility built into the contract so that we can change the man if things don't work out. Dictating the contract should be easier since signing a name brand of a coach this cycle is not likely to be a concern for Cal. We will have to sign a coach with considerable unknowns.

This is one reason I think Travis is easily the best choice at this point. We can sign him to just such a contract which will limit his downside while enjoying what could be great upside. If we have to go back to the drawing board in a few years, so be it. I think Cal athletics will be in a better financial position at that point.

Of course the down side to that is it will be easier for the coach to leave for greener pastures should he and the team blow up.

It's way easier to re-negotiate a contract upward if you need to than to eat it if it's too expensive, isn't it? Sure, you have to have money to do it, but if the program has blown up hopefully revenues and donor support followed. And it's highly unlikely for that to be an issue for a couple of years.

Exactly. Travis and the program "blowing up" and our having to pay him accordingly is NOT a problem, it is what we are HOPING FOR.

Plus as Ahmaad Rorie tweeted:

Quote:

Hopefully the next @CalMensBBall head coach is Coach Travis Decuire. Most loyal dude I know

So hopefully he would stay around.

Since none of what we say here will affect either the hire or the contract, does it really matter which one we post about?

Are you sure? We do have some apparent larger donors, if people are to be believed as well as parents of players and who knows who else. That being said, I could be completely wrong. Just don't know.

Then why have buyout clauses at all?

I guess it has been awhile since Cal fans feared their coach would go to Michigan after one good season or lose him to the 49'ers after a mediocre one.
