Oskidunker, you've easily been around long enough to know that you're not allowed to link stories, tweets or posts from Cal scout or rivals. Don't do it.

It is being reported in Twitter that Martin is meeting with Artis

I'm not sure what to make of this. Artis is ineligible for competition next season. Does this signify that they are unsure about landing a 2015 PG? Also, I assume there are groups on campus that will raise their eyebrows if Martin was to take him. After the whole episode up at Oregon, I wouldn't touch Artis with a 10-foot pole.

2 epiodes actually. First, he was suspended for selling shoes during the pre-season. Then, the late season sex-capades. He is a heck of a player that we recruited very hard until he verballed to UCLA and then swapped them for the Dux. Clearly, there would need to be somethiing that would "explain" his extracuricular activities for him to be accepted @ Cal. Final point, he lost his starting job to Jonathan LLoyd who was thought to be his backup coming into the season.

Walk on? If so fine if he stays on the straight and narrow off the court. No way should we be giving him a scholly.

Same here. Move on and find a better fit.

Questions:
Do the coaches believe in redemption? (and that they can help bring it about?)
For what reason(s) would they consider point guard a position of need (above Singer & Chauca)?

^There was a player at UT who had a restraining order taking out against him by a woman, no criminal charges or anything, and he was out on his ass pretty much immediately. By all accounts it was a first offense.

I'll never say never, but Zo is very, very big on behaving off the court.

Agree, per what appears to have gone on with Artis, no touchy with a ten foot pole.

But appearances don't always tell the whole truth. Could see a scenario where Martin heard from other sources enough positive things, to want to fully evaluate Artis as a possible fit versus simply relying upon public record / opinion.

I believe in redemption, too but I think this guy did some terrible sh*t. Maybe if he took a couple years off for some community service and psychotherapy.

As talent Artis may be, why would ZO take another hella short pg. One shortie is enough of a gamble, but TWO? WTH!

I certainly hope that Coach is not evaluating any opportunity based on the public record. It is clear that all is not right in Artisville, but to assume the public record reflects the facts necessary to make a measured decision based on the risks would certainly result in lost opportunities. At this point Artis doesn't have a lot of leverage no matter his talent. Another off the court issue and he is likely done in college. Martin can pretty much call the shots on the terms of this deal. This could be a simple build team depth play.

On a basketball level, acquiring Artis as opposed to a 2015 PG would be more desirable, as Artis would be 3 years out of HS and much more ready to impact right away. The off the court stuff is heavy, though. Cuonzo probably might have to explain this.

I can't believe Martin's meeting with Artis..wouldn't have the pre-approval of Sandy, knowing this would be a hot topic!

I'm trying to look at this with an open mind. Artis was apparently saddened over what happened and expressed remorse. He was not charged with a crime. That said, he was kicked off of the team and maybe the school (I'll check later). I can see some leeway there, but this is going to have to be explained if it happens. One incident of any kind from Artis and Cuonzo's rep takes a big hit.

This would be a mistake for everyone. G Artis should pursue another venue...like New Mx, UWyo, SDstate or...UMontana.

We surely have an amazing collection of judges who certainly don't care about any standard of evidence.

Regarding either Artis or Martin...

Go Bears!

This would be a mistake. If Cuonzo is trying to build a fan base in Berkeley he has to realize that someone with this history will just draw too much negative attention - from fans and non-fans alike.

Well, lets see.
1. He was suspended for nine games for selling basketball equipment.
2. He was kicked off the team for his role in an alleged assault that occurred both at a previous location and at his apartment.

I know he wasn't charged but please no. He was kicked off a team by freaking Dana Altman.

Coach M and the University community would take a very negative image hit in the arena of public opinion. That's just the way it is.

If culpable G Artis should pursue hoops and education far from home.

If not culpable G Artis should also pursue hoops and education far from home.

Where's Shocky?

I actually think this would be a good move by Martin. Artis is a very talented player. He wasn't actually charged with a crime.

There's a big difference between listening to a recruit's interest in your program vs. pursuing him.

Personally, I doubt anything comes of this.

There is a police report with the alleged victim's testimony about Artis (and Dotson and Austin).

For sure. Coach Martin also met with Rorie and Diallo.

My opinion is we already have two point guards and a clean reputation.

Speaking to Artis can't hurt Cuonzo's attempts to strengthen relationships with the Soldiers, Salesian, and Finlay Prep. Staff looks great on paper, but actually bringing Artis on board would indicate a blatant lack understanding of Cal and Berkeley stakeholders. Very little upside and a huge loss of political capital and credibility. Still amazes me that Tennessee and Auburn would both willingly bring in a coach like Pearl AFTER he'd been convicted of lying to the NCAA. Yikes.

I didn't think Tennessee brought in Pearl after he was convicted of lying to the NCAA. I thought he LEFT Tennessee after that, sat out three years, then joined Auburn.

Yeah, I'm wondering if this communication with Artis is at the request of one of his former coaches.
