This was a great game, a great win, no question. But it was a basketball game and as such, not perfect. It is early, and we will get better than this as time goes on.

The good:

Cuonzo’s first win against a big time program and on a big time stage. This is really great for the Cal program, for national recognition, and for recruiting, both national and local Bay Area.

The Bears were clearly up for this one, after playing 4 very weak opponents and not looking like they could do a lot better. However they did do better. They improved in several areas.

Everyone in the rotation contributed, some more than others, of course. Individually, the brightest spots for me were Kravish, Bird, Mathews, Singer, Behrens and Okoroh. You get this many players playing well and playing together on the same night, and you will win nearly all those games.

Kravish finally played up to form, and better, in all phases. Gone was the reluctance he had in earlier games. Aside from DK, Bird carried the team in the first half, and Mathews carried it in the second half. Singer dished and played good D. Behrens played good D against very strong athletic players.

75% from the free throw line. With all the shooters we have, we should always be over 70% from the line, but this was the first game this season in which we were.

22 assists for 26 baskets is astounding. This means we played as a team. But we know that. For the season we have 66 assists for 98 baskets, which is amazing. Let us hope this is a trend we can continue.

The not so good:

Syracuse had some very quick and strong athletic players, but after losing three of their best from last season, they are clearly a work in progress. They should not have been rated a top 25 team, but that is the usual East Coast sportswriter media bias. It always has been a fact of life. At least now they know we exist and will have to be reckoned with. But a win against a rebuilding team like this would not mean as much for Cuonzo and the team as a win or good game against a very good team like Texas tonight or Wisconsin and Arizona down the road.

Rebounding is still not where it could be, as we tied Syracuse at 38 apiece. Tonight’s game will be a real test for our rebounders.

Some players could do better. Okoroh can improve in all phases, but it is amazing how fast he IS improving. Behrens could improve his shooting. Tarwater could look to get open more, eliminate air-balls, and RMB can improve in all areas. The player I was most disappointed in was Wallace. Joseph was a much quicker point guard, and beat Ty off the dribble several times, twice leaving him in the dust as he drove past him for easy layups. 4 turnovers for the second game in a row. Defenders stole the ball from him on his dribble, and he lost the ball and got shots blocked in the paint. He air-balled a shot from three. He threw away a pass to Bird on the break, by leading him too much, but I think they gave the turnover to Jabari. Wallace is close to the point where he is giving up as many points as he is passing for or scoring himself. He can play a lot better than his. I think he was just too amped up for this game, his first trip to NYC, and first trip to MSG. I think he will do better tonight.

Agree with most of what you wrote. I thought Singer played well in every aspect save shooting. He barely looks at the basket and his shot is absolutely broken. He is clearly the best ball handler and decision maker, though, so he has to be out there at the end. I actually think he should start for CB when the opponent isn't so big.

I disagree that tying Syracuse in rebounding was a bad result. They are far bigger, longer, and more athletic than we are. They had two 5-star recruits on that team and a plethora of 4-star athletes. Any win over a program that can hand pick their talent is a fantastic result and to do it in their backyard on national television is even better. A win or a close loss against Texas would be just incredible for this program.

My good was in attacking the zone mostly with fast accurate passing, and getting back quickly to stop fast breaks. I agree that Wallace was often out of team sync, forcing the dribble, passing to the corners when they would trap. He also did not show a time and score strategy, and should have used the clock, before trying to score at the end. Sam is better at that. Ty will get help from coaches. Also Ty kept the ball on the right side once, thus not making the D move, so we could find the open man.
Today we should use many shoot fakes to get the big Texans jumping and fouling. They want to block everything and with 7 guys over 6'8 to our 3, they do block and rebound a lot.
Coach Martin and staff know how to get the best from our super team. Do it again Bears.

Yeah, Wallace was frustrating to watch last night. I expected Wallace to play more like Matthews did and vice versa. I am hoping that Wallace was just flustered by the imposing length of the zone and will do much better and a predominately man defense tonight. I can't wait.

It's worth noting that Iowa is only shooting 39% against Syracuse with 2 minutes to play so their zone is still very tough to score against. Their 5-star freshman Chris McCoullough is having a monster game against Iowa so perhaps our bigs deserve more credit for the interior defense that was played.

'Cuse is in a tight one with Iowa with a couple mins left. I'm still feeling good about the win last night, but coming back to earth a bit. Maybe the Orange are just deflated after their thrashing?

Ty works best against man defense, because he can use his athleticism to beat his man. His passing is good, but not great, so zones can frustrate him. OTOH, his defense was solid last night. I also agree w/ the poster who pointed out that tying 'Cuse in rebounding is excellent.

yep. another benefit to this was controlling the tempo. Syracuse wants to get out and go. Playing quickly vs. that 2-3 zone is exactly what Boeheim wants but Cuonzo's guys did not oblige, played with controlled aggression. looked like a Keady team! once Syracuse pressed, the game got very physical, the refs swallowed whistles, and the Orange looked better in that open frenzy. once Cal slowed it down again after breaking the press instead of jacking up early shots we gained control again I thought

It's not as if Iowa is a bad team though. They are currently seeded 8th in Lunardi's bracketology, were expected to do very well in the Big Ten this year (4th) and look the part of a good team. Looks like the Iowa/Syracuse game is coming down to the wire.

Wallace seemed to be forcing it a number of times, making mistakes a player of his ability and experience should not make. He'll have better nights than this most times he's on the floor. Passing against the zone was exceptional at times. Weird shooting night: good percentage but several air balls. My first look at Okoroh and he was much better than I expected to see. On balance, a very good outing for this early in the year.

I hope Cuse is really good. Good for our RPI. And may indicate that we are for real. We have to play this out all year though. Remember, we beat No. 1 last year and didn't make the NCAAs.

I'd love to see all of us on this board move on from stats that are meaningless like total rebounds. What matters is the % of defensive boards we got vs. % of offensive rebounds. Total rebounds have a lot more to do with total shots made or missed than glass work. The goal is to get 100% of the D boards and hopefully 25% of the offensive boards
