Great, gutty win and Ty was a stud.

But...DK needs to hit the bunnies and our jump shooters well...need to hit their jump shots especially when that open. Tarwater and Mathews were 2-13.

I have no issues with Tarwater's misses. He was open, squared up and his feet were set. Sometimes they just don't fall. Luckily it happened in a game we won anyway.

As for Mathews. I don't want to call his play selfish, but he seems to have made up his mind to shoot at every opportunity, open or not. And one of his problems with shooting when not open is that he doesn't create shots for himself very well. I think he should stick to being a spot up shooter because he really doesn't do anything else well offensively, yet.

Put tons of salt in a bucket of cold water, and your beer will be cold very quickly

Whoops, gotta put the beer in the bucket too.

agree, this team obviously needs Bird
We can't expect Ty to go one on five every game

but on the other hand, we again found a way to win (on the road)

considering no one besides Ty had a good game, and at least 3 players had sub-shooting games from them (jordan, kravish, tarwater) we had to get it done on defense, which we did

Yes, I can nitpick. Ty was not a stud, for one. First of all, 5 of 9 from the line including a front end, is not studly. His play was extremely selfish for all but a couple occasions. The announcers commented on his teammates standing around while he does his thing, and I would say that speaks to not involving teammates. He only passed once when driving the lane, and only made 2 baskets on 13 drives, which includes missing 5+ floaters and making 1. The ball ended up on the ground on 3 of them, luckily rolling on the ground to a teammate and to himself once.

He made up for it with some great rebounding, defense, the one nice pass to Kravish and one to Singer, and 2 big threes. I actually expect more from him, however, and would grade this a B. SO many wasted possessions ruined his first half. If he's at least OK in the first half, the game is not close.

That being said, we clearly don't win without him and he had a great second half. But he has to be more efficient and for as much as he dribbled around and shot the ball in the first half, he should score more than 6. Perhaps if he found open shooters, maybe Mathews would not go 1-8. Our shooters need to be catching the ball with open shots, so if you drive into the lane and meet resistance, someone is probably open and can make that shot with more regularity than a defended floater.

29-8-4 with 1 turnover not "studly", ohhhkay dude.

The rest of the team shot 31%, in the second half I was almost upset when he did pass it. He did practically everything but drive the team bus.

Seriously. He shot over 50% on top of the rest of his stats.

GREAT game by Ty.

Gotta thank Ty for pulling this game out when things seemed grim.

Ty is doing yeoman work keeping this patched-up team on the winning side. When Bird and Chauca return, the ball will be better distributed. Chauca is very good at making good entry passes to Kravish and feeding the other shooters. Many of Singer's passes get tipped or are a little off the mark. I recall one sequence where his first pass got tipped back to him and his second to Kravish got tipped and intercepted.

It is amazing the grief Singer is given, when he is in breathing distance of Wallace for the team lead in assists, playing less minutes and having the ball in his hands less frequently per minute than does Ty. He also has maintained his career average, iirc, of about 2.5 assists to turnovers. That is, in other words, his second straight season of leading our Bears in this important stat.

The lad is not perfect, the same as every other Cal player. He always plays hard and unselfishly.

I guess Cuonzo really is stupid, as was Monty, to like his play and Cuonzo especially ignorant for playing him so much.

I'm no Singer hater, but don't you think players that handle the ball but refuse to shoot are going to get more assists? 2.5:1 assist to turnover ratio is darn good though.

Uh, whether he shoots or not does not impact assist to turnover ratio.
South bender is pointing out that he is finding open players for shots without making risky passes.

Hmmm, maybe you are saying that the turnover risk comes not from making risky passes, but by not driving in a risky way to create his own shot. That could be.

I don't need singer to drive more. I just need his confidence elevated to the point where he can confidently the stroke the open J. Don't become a doubting Brandon Smith who frittered away his career with cold feet. For one thing, however, Singer's has both a lot more size and game, so I don't see that happening.

Yes. Point well taken. I would counter, however, with suggesting Sam is slowly upping his shots per game. I have not actually looked closely at this, but it is my sense in the last few games that Singer is looking to shoot just a little more frequently.

I am not claiming that Singer is the second coming of Bob Cousy, just that he adds precious value to this team. And that Cuonzo is well aware of that.

Lastly, it just burns me to see Sam's being slammed on this site. He obviously is a sensitive young guy (are not all of our guys?), so why do alleged Cal fans want to rip him?

Not sure I understand the stats. Ty was 11-20 from the field (2-3 from 3) with only 1 turnover. If he only made 2 baskets on 13 drives, how did he only have 8 misses from inside the arc?

Uh, I didn't say that it did. I was noting a reason for the high assist numbers while complimenting him on his assist to turnover ratio.

Where are you getting that he only made 2 baskets on 13 drives?

I really like Sam Singer and I think he will get nothing but better. There was a short period of time when he made the three yesterday and following that, where he handled the ball with the kind of confidence we want to see all the time from him. It gave the look where the defense had to focus on him as opposed to playing him soft. Then it went by-by. I think this is a work in progress and I really don't know how much of this is SS or the desires of CM as to what Sam does. It needs time and patience, and I think it will come out just fine. Like everyone else, I am hoping for sooner than later.

That was Fornication's post above. I was questioning it (to say the least).

Singers pass to Behrens was money and at a key point in the game.
