Looks like a 6'6" shooting guard from Chicago for the class of 2016, probably a replacement for Jolly.

Supposedly has an offer from Indiana State:

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/216972/nick-robinson

We wouldn't need him to contribute much next year, but we'll need him to help on the wing in 2017-18.

Notable Bears from Chicago:
Dennis Gates
Sean Lampley
Jerome Randle

Looks like they're just trying to fill out the roster. Honestly, this isn't good news. There are few impact players available at this point.

He had committed to Indiana State before the Early Signing period, but decommitted in January.

Finally some good news. That he got an offer means CM is still active on the recruiting trail, not pulling up stakes just yet. I hope the UC review is handled quickly and his contract situation is resolved soon.

While he may not be a blue chip, the Tribune calls him one of the top uncommitted players in Illinois.

He seems to be getting better schools to look at him, so maybe he's one of those underrated kids. Played for a big time AAU program, Mac Irvin Fire, so it's not like he didn't get exposure.

To me that reads like he committed early and thus got no other offers but mother nature had an idea and gave him another few inches. One of the issues with having just a few (rather than many) possible OOD is that other kids are uncertain as to playing time and where things will fall out. Lets get dumpster fire put out and get this done.

I found older and newer video. Nothing great so I am not linking, but he has clearly gotten a lot better. That could explain his situation. On the other hand, if you are going to have no offensive structure, you need quicker players than Robinson and Coleman.

Yeah, and after watching all of these mid-majors, with no-name recruits, beat the star-studded high majors, it seems that scouting and projecting recruits is the most important factor.

I'm not saying this kid is the bee's knees...but Jorge wasn't a highly regarded recruit. Some times those kids surprise you.

But this requires a coach who can coach up the less gifted players into something better. CM as a former guard might have the acumen... Bird's development late in the season is something else.

If Cuonzo were already looking for a new job, why would he be pursuing Robinson? Jolly would be a better card to have in his back pocket than Coleman or Robinson. If he's going to bail, he's looking for a lateral job with more money, not returning to a mid major for less $s and worse talent. He wouldn't be panicking about going down a level at this point. He needs to backfill Jolly now. He picked up Coleman because of Chauca and he was the best available role player available.

I believe Damon Dillard played for Mac Irvin Fire.

I'd rather have an ace scout than an ace recruiter on our staff. I'm sure Martin can close the deals, and without the sleaze too often associated with recruiters.

Fair enough...but all recruits or draft picks are risks. Gary Franklin!

I think CM's system that emphasizes defense levels things out a bit. If a kid plays D...he can contribute, and that's what CM wants and that's what Jorge gave (plus a keg of grit and FU I only need possible).

I'd hope this scout is able to determine character as well.
I can't think of anyone on our team that I'd not want to sit down and share a meal with!

+ Many. there were times you couldn't say that. But game after game and interview after interview I am left smiling about what fine young men are in the program. The hacks that are piling on the bears this week haven't been there for that and many of those that have covered the bears are being way too silent.

I hear what you are saying, but on the flip side, there are guys like Joe Shipp, Dennis Gates, and Jorge Gutierrez who were all late signees and became impact players for us. In the case of Jorge, a conference player of the year, defensive player of the year, and NBA guard.

I'm not saying Nick Robinson will be that, but let's approach this with an open mind.

(Of course, Jordi Geli, Saulius Kuzminskas, and Jack Hartmann all signed for us late in the spring. If you don't know or remember who they are, well there you go).

Btw, I seem to recall a Nick Robinson who played guard for Stanford and hit a half court shot to win a big game once (like against Arizona).

He has awesome dunks like Brown...but can he shoot, defend, and play ball? Dunks works well in transition...but how is he in a half court offense?

Well, I recall 2 of 3. But drawing a blank on Jack Hartmann. Do you mean Hartmut Ortmann (continuing the Euro, late signee trend)?

Name's somewhat familiar, but also drawing a blank on Jack Hartmann. Hartmut Ortmann was a transfer from Wake Forest.

Jack Hartmann was one of Bozeman's recruits who came in as a freshman in 1994. He was a thin white guy who tried to talk in Ebonics and who was probably overmatched at this level. He transferred out in 1994 after Midnight Madness but before the first game, I believe. He may have ended up at Biola.

I think he was also affiliated with the LA Rockfish well before the Rockfish group of Wethers-Legans-Vanderlaan hit campus.

Gates was a 4* that never became a consistant starter for the Bears. Are you thinking of Theo? Geli isn't really a fair comparison either since he was hampered by injuries from day one. I'm not sure he was a late signee either. How about Nikola Knezevich?

I think who evaluates also needs to be taken into consideration. Ben Braun, was at best, a mediocre head coach at the high-major level. However, he and the staff that hired were good evaluators of talent. He regularly brought talented players into the program that were not highly-touted. Whether it was Lampley, Ryan Anderson, and others. Then you have late signees like Shipp, Theo, Tamir, and Rod Benson (should have had a better career). Sure, some of his gets didn't pan out, but he had a decent hit-rate.

It remains to be seen if Cuonzo and his staff have a similar level of acumen in evaluating. We'll find out soon enough with Roman Davis and Coleman.

Gates only averaged 11 a game in HS. I don't think he was a 4 star.

Yes, if I remember correctly, Quentin Richardson was Gates' teammate, and they won the Ilinois state championship as seniors at Whitney Young. I think there were others, too, on that team who got D-1 scholarships besides Quentin Richardson and Dennis Gates.
