It's a tumultuous time for our beloved program. Hopefully, we're in the process of righting the ship. Here's my brief and partially informed attempt at summarizing the state of affairs:

The Coach/Investigation
According to Mr. Shock, a contract for Cuonzo is waiting to be approved by UC President Napolitano. The investigation isongoing? These of course go hand in hand. An extension would probably mean Cuonzo is in good standing with regards to the investigation.

Assistant Coaches
Need a replacement for Yanni. Tracy Webster is one of 5 candidates for the UW-Milwaukee job.

Early Entries
Brown and Rabb have made no decisions about their future plans.

Recruiting
Tyson Jolly has been granted release from his LOI. However, I don't believe he's picked a new school. Any chance he sticks with Cal?
Don Coleman 6'1 PG 2016 is still on board and sticking with his commitment. Good man.
Nick Robinson 6'6 SF 2016 from Chicago visiting in April.
Jemarl Baker and Alec Hickman still committed for 2017.

They may declare any time; if they don't hire agents, they have until May 23rd to withdraw.

The first part is not correct. You have to declare at least 60 days prior to the draft--which is April 24th this year, I believe.

Assistant Coach prospect: Kerry Keating,

I second that!
I know he has said that Cal would be a great school to be at.
He does have a young family now, and if he wanted to keep them in the bay that would be good, but that's one hell of a commute from Santa Clara schools to Berkeley, so a move would be in order.
He grew up in Long Island, nice neighborhood.
His father, Larry, is one of the country's top collegiate athletic administrators. Currently a senior associate athletic director at Kansas.
Most of his peeps have been in the east, not sure how that might have changed. A big consideration would be his wife. Where is she from and what's her family like - is she willing to move every 5 years, as college coaches are apt to do. (Rough career choice from that standpoint!!!)

Keating was a hot up and coming recruiter for Ben Howland at UCLA, got Darren Collison and Kevin Love and others. Howland wanted him to stay but KK knew he was a bit too energetic for KK, who was ready to step out on his own and so jumped at the Santa Clara job.

If Cal could land Keating, that would be HUGE (!!!!) in my opinion. But I'm not seeing it being a fit at this point. Both 44 and from different cultural hubs. I'd love it, though!!

Does Napolitano sign off on every head coaching position in the UC system?

I'm not sure, but I think she has to sign off on contracts over a certain dollar amount.

Or over a certain amount of potential political heat

I hope that someone (such as our Mike Williams) is telling Napolitano how much it might cost if she sits on the contract for months. She is currently exercising a pocket veto.

I think this is the EXACT reason it went to the UC President - given the recent history with harassment issues at Berkeley.

Keating might be a good choice, he helped recruit the right talent to UCLA and they started to slip with his departure

I don't believe that Mike Williams has ever talked to Napolitano; nor is he likely to ever talk to her in he future. That would be against the rules of the bureauracy.

It is pretty impossible for any of us to speculate what these top coaching prospects (who IMO have the world on a string and have plenty of damn good choices) may be thinking as far as their personal considerations in the job hunt.

Let's just hope we either land Keating, or, if that's not in the cards, someone else who really wants to do good work at Cal.

Or Straight! Let's get real and not just politically correct. It's fun!
Seriously, I think Mike is way over his head. If he hasn't been able to sign Martin to a contract up to this point it doesn't really seem like he has the juice to buck some super politicized Game of Thrones.

Meanwhile down south, UCLA fans are launching their newest "Fire Alford" effort with 2 mobile billboards rolling around town with large signs calling for the firing of both the AD and Alford. Since the trucks don't have a collection bucket for $10M of buyout funds, this is not likely to be very successful. They actually think Brad Stevens or Tony Bennett will be parachuting in any moment. The gap between ucla's self perception and the perception of the rest of the world is wide and growing.

It's not just his disappointing results. It's the past history of enabling rapists and current nepotism that is fueling his critics.

When fucla had Looney last year, a college star, and Bryce still shot twice as many times as he did, I knew fucla had the right coach:p

True... It will be interesting to see "coachability" as it relates to Ball. And where does Bryce play? 2 guard?
Not all that clear and it may even end up a bigger chemistry problem.

Cuonzo (assuming he remains at Cal) is likely looking at having to replace 2 assistants. It will be very interesting to see who fills those spots.

Especially while CM waits for his contract and the Yanni thing twists and turns in the speculative press... Cal job will look like a place to run from....

Well isn't THAT interesting......
May 11-15 NBA Draft Combine

http://registrar.berkeley.edu/calendar
May 9-12 Cal Finals

I post this with just the interesting observation that for CAL kids declaring and going to the combine involves some pretty serious negotiations with faculty about things.

2 other random speculaltions

a) I assume that it is part of the NBA collective bargaining agreement that kids can't have the same status they do in NHL and MLB where teams draft college players who defer. Teams keep rights to sign but kids keep playing. Is that right?

b) If you neither declare nor withdrawl what happens? Can you still be drafted?

I assume you can't get drafted as an early entry if you don't declare. Imagine a player secretly contacting the team they want to play for and indicating they'd sign a contract with them for big $ if they drafted him in the 2nd round.

A Cal player could finish finals and attend the last three days of the combine.

I'm taking it as a good sign that Ivan and Jaylen haven't declared yet. At least they're not in a big hurry to leave school, although they may still enter the draft.

As I understand it, an athlete who leaves early needs to finish out the last academic term during which they competed in good academic standing or the school takes a grad rate/academic progress hit.

At the very least, Jaylen and Rabb care enough about Cal and Cuonzo not to immediately withdraw and take incompletes even though it would be in their professional interests to do so.
BeachedBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not all classes require finals and IR and JB might be discussing options with their profs to modify their schedules to both complete the semester AND attend the full combine.
