the man from search firm DHR International who arguably has had a major influence in the recent fortunes of Cal (and Stanford) athletics. His firm has been reported to be handling the Georgia Tech basketball coaching search.

Sugiyama has been reported to be the one involved in the hiring of Dykes and Martin at Cal and Harbaugh and Dawkins at Stanford.

Story starts on page 19, complete with pictures of him and the Cal coaching hires ...

"One of the greatest examples of a search firm hiring a tremendous coach behind the scenes happened in 2006. Stanford Football was in need of a coach. In 2005, the Cardinal won just one game. The football program had a profit of just $35,000. What a difference a year, a new Head Coach, and the work of a search firm can make in a very short amount of time. They won 12 games, and made $4.1 million for the school just four years later."

"Some firms offer a guarantee if a candidate they've placed leaves the school. If for any reason an AD or a coach were to leave before two years, DHR International would conduct a new search for free, Sugiyama said. In most instances, Parker would offer a guarantee for 12 months."

I'd rather have an AD that knows who the good coaching prospects are rather than contract the job to outsiders who have their own agendas and interests in mind. Sadly, my hunch is that Williams would hire a search firm if has to make a hire.

it's more than just identifying candidates. search firms can do it discreetly and are better at vetting the candidates' background.

Some ADs prefer to pick their own candidates but would still hire a search firm for the "logistics" such as background check ...

"Bobinski has been running the search within a tight circle. The school hired a search firm, DHR international in Chicago, for a fee of $70,000, but Bobinski said that he would rely on it mostly for logistical matters and not to provide names."

+1. It is about logistics and then arms length relationships. Mike Williams (or any AD) is too busy to place multiple phone calls to a coach just to get the number of his agent who then has to be courted. Search firms have LOTS of that info. at their finger tips and can call the c's agent to feel out interest and no one is the worse for wear. They also are positioned to make phone calls to vet.

I don't agree with your preference at all. I'd much rather outsource to a trusted agency and take the politics and personal favoritism away from the AD. History has shown Cal ADs are far, far, far more likely to make stupid hires for political reasons than to possess unique skills when it comes to identifying and hiring coaching talent.

And given what I've seen from Williams, I would pray with all my might that he hires a search firm instead of trusting his own judgment when it comes to hiring a coach. That guy is in hopelessly over his head on the coaching side of things and needs to stick to business management issues.

I don't disagree about Cal AD's being in over their head about coaching hires. That said, Kasser hiring Mariucci was looking like a good hire, before the 9ers decided to mess it up. Braun was a solid hire considering the circumstances (Bozeman fired in August and Braun was coming off a Tournament win over Duke the previous season). Gladstone hiring Tedford looked like a genius move for a period of time. Barbour surprised me with getting Monty, which wasn't a search firm hire.

My hunch is that Williams doesn't have the chops to know what a great coach looks like, either, but how does a search firm help him? All a search firm will do is suggest one of their "guys", not necessarily the best coach or the best fit for the job. How else do we come up with two hires (Dykes and Martin) that have no clue how Cal operates upon being hired? Martin kept repeating the "Number 1 public university in the WORLD!" line as if he had just found out about it recently.

It also allows coaches and their agents to say they haven't spoken with [insert name of college here] while they're both trying to land recruits and their agents and the recruiter are in heavy talks or to deny they ever talked with [ ] about the job when it isn't offered or they turn it down.
