Did anyone else pick up their free Tony Gonzales bobblehead at the recently-concluded Cal Day? I can only presume that someone discovered a case of them somewhere and decided to distribute them. Does anyone know the history of these bobbleheads?

This bobblehead is strange in that Tony is in a #34 basketball uniform with "Gonzales" on the back, but he is palming a football in his left hand instead of a basketball.

Another strange thing is that there's no sponsor's name (e.g. State Farm, Carl's Junior) to be found. It's just a plain green base.

Tony played both Football and Basketball at Cal. His last name is spelled Gonzalez so Cal had to make new ones with the proper spelling for the Season Ticket Holders who were to receive them.

My original one had his last name spelled as "GONZAIEZ"; the replacement was correctly spelled "GONZALEZ".

Didn't Wayne Stewart play both sports?

Yes, those were given to basketball season ticket holders two or three years ago. I have one. There was no sponsor on them. A lot of people probably never picked them up because they were distributed late due to the previously mentioned misspelling.

I have one from renewing my season tix. I think 3 seasons ago? This one sits with my Oski and Tedford bobbleheads.

Didn't Nick Van Laan play football after his Virginia/Cal basketball careers were over? Tried to get drafted as a TE.

I have the one with the misspelling, fresh in the unopened box. Waiting for it to be worth millions on Ebay in a couple of years. :p

Yes, did I mention that these bobbleheads sit beside 100 Years of Blue and Gold, The Big Game, Pappy, the Gentle Bear and numerous Cal media guides, from the time when they were sent out to season ticket holders?
