I am not rooting against him. Hate Zaga for quasi-tampering. But Jordan got his degree so good will and god speed.

(BTW - if you are frustrated that one of our GRADUATES decided to move on then your priorities are, I might submit, slightly askew. It isn't professional - it is college...and Mathews is a college grad.)

I agree w/ SCT. No reason to be down on Jordan. I'd temper my angst, however; it was against Utah Valley State, and Mullins wasn't exactly chopped liver last night...

Not down on him, but definitely disappointed to not have him finish as a Bear. Would be a huge compliment to Bird and Rabb. I think he may be the difference in 2-3 win/losses this year.

Too early to be certain, but I prefer Mullins, because of his all around game. As I have said already on another thread, the only thing that Mathews does better is the 3, and Mullins is no slouch from beyond the arc. Mullins, from the little I have seen, is sort of the basketball equivalent of a 5 tool player.

Indeed, our team looks much more to be a team without Wallace, Brown, and Mathews.

That is more assists in one game at Gonzaga then for entire seasons at Cal

At this point, and because of the small sample size, I'll hedge and say that it's a straight up swap. My expectation is that Mullins has the ability to be better because of his handle and the effort he demonstrated on defense. His shot has a tendency to come out flat a few times a game, but he's on target and deadly when open. Plus, and most importantly in my mind, he WANTS to be here.

Thank you, petalumabear. You are a wiser and more temperate man than I am. We will know more in time, and I have rushed to judgement...

So far, I am loving this year's team, particularly given that Ivan has not yet played.

Go Bears!

LOL... Did you say "older".?
This is a discussion board and no opinion of yours is wrong, only mine.. If you doubt that just ask Schlocky. I sat directly across from the Royal Midget last night. I have to give him props for showing up in Cal color last night. Blue jeans and a bright blue pair of shoes (OJ-esque)..

I am so happy that hoops is going again that I was happy at the 7pm game time... Imagine that..

At any rate, I enjoyed the effort shown last night and was pleased by our 3 new guys (Charlie and Don showed they are frosh and Mullins showed he's played a little at this level) and our senior group of lesser (so far) lights in Domingo and Roger. This is going to be a more enjoyable team (early opinion) than last years...

I did not say "older," as you likely are not. I have noticed many times of late that when I look around (restaurant, public shower room, etc.), I am thinking, damn, I'm the oldest person here! Fortunately age so far has not diminished my passionate love for the game of basketball!

Jordan Mathews...does not play for Cal, so who cares?

Based on the minimal info of one game, I slightly prefer Mullins because he does a lot more than Mathews. Will have to see what he does against better competition. That being said, I much prefer Mullins because he is a bear, not a Zag.

Jaylen Brown doesn't play for us - do you care how does? Like someone else mentioned, Jordan is also a cal alum. I think most people are interested in people who have been associated with the program.

If I was sitting that close to Schlocky I'd ask that he be removed from the arena.

Well, there was a court full of players and officials out there between us. But he was hopping around like he had ants in his pants so I suppose might have bounced across the court without my noticing...

Mathews. He played on our team for 3 years. He is a very good 3-point shooter and an improving defender. He got quite a lot of minutes for us, and scored a lot of points. I am surprised you haven't heard of him.

It still makes little sense unless he really didn't get along with his teammates or coaching staff. Anyway, I have learned not to fault anyone for doing what they feel is best for themselves and their families. We gave Cal three good years, played and studied hard, and moved on. Lets enjoy the players and coaches that are here.

He did finish as a Bear academically. In fact he did so so impressively enough that he was able to take his talents somewhere else. No fault in him doing so.

He didn't want to be here anymore. Best to part ways. You don't want negative energy on your team. It's cancer, doesn't matter how good he was. He wanted to leave. If he was unhappy last year, everyone felt that. He's better there and Cal's better without him. Win win.

If he scores in double-digits in five consecutive games, I will be shocked.

Jordan was a good player for CAL. His Dad was a pain in the ass and made coaching Jordan impossible...thus the transfer.

Heard the same. He knew it all. Knew better than than the coaches. And he ditched his teammates. Thank god for Mullins!

Guessed and suggested this on BI, but MB and others tried me as the fool. Sure sounds plausible to me...Now, what dad has done for Jordan may be good in the long run for Jordan, but I am not here for Jordan unless he is all in for Cal. Happy trails.

You are both older than me, and can I just say, I really appreciate old people.
So full of wisdom, life experience - young people think they know so much, and while they may be quick AND smart, there is often something missing.
I wish I could capture so many old folks' life stories down. I'm sure you both have great tales to tell.
I'm getting there.... Just hope I can find a biographer before I go.
Thanks for sharing with us on this board.
Cheers.

Back to topic of Mathews, I was REALLY looking forward to seeing him as a senior and setting some 3 point FG records.
I really liked him as a person, and he was a solid player.
I wish him lots of success at Gonzaga and in life. I'm sure he'll have it.
Very impressive that he graduated from Cal in 3 years while playing a varsity sport like basketball!!
Anyone who disses him is an idiot in my book. Don't root for him b/c he's not wearing a Cal jersey, fine. But were anyone to insult his character solely because he is playing at Gonzaga, well, that's a slight on you, not him.

if we had Mathews on this team, we would have been one of the conference favorites, and had a chance for a deep NCAA run. Without him we are a very good team and can still go far, but a bad foul here, unlucky bounce there + we have to stay healthy

bottom line is Cal with Mathews would be bringing in a very good shooter off the bench, or we would have had the luxury of having deep threats from all over the floor. He would have made us extremely dangerous to any team in the country
