Why Tom Crean? You're just looking at his record, especially at Marquette. He failed at Indiana, which is a hard job to fail at. He usually had really good talent and still couldn't win big there. There's a reason(s) it didn't work out there and it's not because of their fans being nuts. This would like hiring Howland.
He's a no-starter for me. I'd take a chance on even Gates or Pasternack rather than go with a retread.
He's a known commodity with a track record or success at different levels including the Big 10 where was coach of the year last year. What other guy being publicly discussed has a track record of success? Ok fine so he's got a winning % similar to Cuonzo's. Who do you think will do better and what evidence is there if it? Plus, Crean is universally considered a high character guy. Just look at the outpouring of support when he got canned. IU may not have been ok with his 18-16 record last year which was his worst in 10 years there but it comes in the heels of a Big 10 title and plenty of good seasons and tourney appearances before that. That's fine if you're comfortable rolling the dice on an unproven guy but that comes with a huge range of outcomes. We know what we'd get with a guy like Crean (or Howland) and it's a level of success that we don't get to see very often at Cal.
He averaged 23 wins in his last 6 seasons at Indiana. Sign me up for that kind of "failure". I don't see anyone on our list that could replicate that.
