A buddy just told me that he heard on KNBR this morning that Musselman had talked to Cal twice but turned us down..Maybe he did get an offer but said no??

KNBR was just repeating the CBS tweet.

so who knows if this Gary Parrish is correct. There are just as many sources saying that Musselman is headed to Cal. Guess we are still in wait and see mode.

Nevada will have a good team next year (top 25ish). He probably figured he could roll with UNR and turn a good year there into better offers than a complete rebuild at Cal.

To review, Musselman and Bennett have turned us down. And if you believe the report from CGB, Gates was only given a cursory phone interview and was never really a serious candidate.

That only leaves the kicker (who would probably take the job) and Turner (who would probably take it as well).

Huge coup for Nevada obviously. Cal would have accurately been described as a "dream job" for Musselman even just a year ago.

None of us knows.
If in fact he and Bennett did turn us down (which I doubt), it's an eye opener for the university. It means that Cal is seen as a place you can't succeed at by the coaching fraternity.

It's not the coaches, it's all on Cal.

Hey at least we hired a good football coach. I say we offer Wilcox an extension now, cause its clear we want as few coaching searches in the future as possible.

According to Jon Wheeler, the search process is Mike Williams and Aswin Puri and basically no one else. Basketball alums and donors are being frozen out. Now that could be sour grapes on Wheels part because he's not involved, but it is consistent with how Williams handles himself.

This does sound like a hyper-aggressive attempt by Team Musselman to claim that he was offered the job.

That might not be true. But when you maintain complete silence, as the athletic department is doing, you're basically permitting anyone who got an interview to claim they got an offer and turned it down.

EDIT: Apparently the Twitter spin was wrong. Reno newspaper says Musselman didn't get an offer and just withdrew from the search.

I don't see - from CAL - the immediate downside UNLESS this drags into Mid-April. Essentially Team Musselman leveraged the Cal opening for a raise. Good for him. What I dont get is the removal/firing/deparure of Huff. Is he going to Mizzu?

Yes, and through that whole process this board was in tantrum mode saying we were effed, the process was effed up, we suck, no one wants to be here, fire Mike Williams, etc.

I'll say now what I said then. Let's see what we ACTUALLY have when a coach is hired and judge then rather than make interim judgments based on rumor. I absolutely wouldn't deny the possibility that Cal completely screws this up, but I can wait until the end of the process.

I doubt that Musselman was offered the Cal job. The Reno reporters have zero credibility with me. Zero. I also doubt that Bennet was offered. NCAA violations, no big 5 head coaching experience and notoriously headstrong = NFW Bennet was going to get hired.
Just relax and don't believe everything that you hear. I'm hoping that Abdur-Rahim gets the job but even if that is a pipe dream I think that the search committee will seek out his advice.

Why Tom Crean? You're just looking at his record, especially at Marquette. He failed at Indiana, which is a hard job to fail at. He usually had really good talent and still couldn't win big there. There's a reason(s) it didn't work out there and it's not because of their fans being nuts. This would like hiring Howland.

He's a no-starter for me. I'd take a chance on even Gates or Pasternack rather than go with a retread.

This is Cal spin leaked to a reporter.
I think it is highly likely he was made an offer but the negotiations didn't work out for everything muscleman wanted...money, assistants etc.
