Slow-walking through the shot clock

great win for the bears on Thursday. Sitting near the UW fans I enjoyed their sullen disbelief at the end, and the jubilant of the bears fans in contrast.

Still... a pet peeve: at the end of close games, Cal drives me crazy by adopting this slo-mo action as the shot clock counts down, usually culminating in a violation or a Hail Mary missed shot. In this game we were very active in our half court offense through most of the game, moving the defense around in a manner that opened Conor or Grant for the pass that broke UW's zone. Gratifying to see. But then at the end I was jumping out of my seat in frustration as the clock counted down to single digits with our guys moving like molasses, and no openings were available, predictably. I have to believe this is a coaching issue. It's as if the coaches are dictating such a high level of caution, worrying about a turnover, that they short circuit any possibility of us getting an open shot. We were a bit lucky to win, under the circumstances.

Milking clock makes sense sometimes, especially when you've got players who can get their own shot at the end of the shot clock going one on one

But that isn't this years Cal, so I also don't like this strategy

I get you don't want to shoot early in the shot clock, but you want to score points to win tight games

I equate running clock down to 8 seconds multiple times near end of game to playing not to lose, and I've never liked that in any sport

Mostly of the mindset that puts into the players head

I think it is more a matter of Austin, Sueing, and McNeil all tightening up a bit in crunch time. Hopefully getting the monkey off their backs has helped cure this some.

Part of the problem probably is that we haven't been in that situation too many times this year.
