So I guess I was the only one to see the interview, it was well worth the watch

- Kidd has come a long way from 360 degree Jason. He is very articulate, thoughtful and personable

- ESPN showed several choice Kidd highlights while in a Cal uniform, was cool to see

- First question from Rachel Nicols was "I do want to start though with the vacant head coaching job at Cal". Kidd was complimentary towards Cal, but obviously didn't want to commit to anything. One interesting nugget is that he implied during his time off he spent some time hanging out with kids on the AAU circuit

- When questioned about the Lakers job, Kidd was again non-committal (obviously) but did say he was going to be patient during this process and wait till the season is over to see what opportunities come up. Which implies he's probably going to want to wait to see what happens with the Lakers before making a decision about Cal.

-I think Cal is a great institution...we'll see what happens. I'd like to get back into coaching whether it's college or nba. Right now, it's nice to be wanted. That tells me I'm doing the right thing. A year off helps too...to help clean up some things, to refocus, have that energy and understand the kids being the around the AAU circuit a little bit and understanding the kids today.

In response to the Laker job he's said that would be a great opportunity too but he's going to be patient. Thinks Walton is actually doing a good job considering the challenge.

All in all, he seemed pretty open to the Cal gig. Had a couple smirks while talking about it. He's interested!

I just think that this ignores that he coached for 4 years in the NBA. He was, in a lot of ways, the on floor coach since he was 12. He fundamentally understands the game in pretty deep ways.

Can he teach? Who knows. But unlike Zo - who honestly was more of a "you gotta have passion" guy and one who believed his own PERSONAL story could translate to other's desire Jason Kidd CLEARLY understands Basketball principles.

But I didn't watch the Bucks. Maybe it just wasn't there. I would have to see a ton of tape and try to understand if it was possible to see what they were or were not doing. I know that should be something JK is trying to gauge.

Steve Kerr would be a great asset in this respect. I hope JK has a relationship to get his insights in a deep, thoughtful and lengthy way and and as a Cal dad clearly understands a lot about the program.

(Had to check - Kerr's time in Phoenix didn't overlap with Jason but he was a GM in the league during Kidd's peak and then coached against him for 2 years. He just would HAVE to have a really well formed opinion on it and just seems like the kind of guy that would give really good, unbiased assessments).

One tidbit about Kidd that gives me pause is his connection to Bozeman - a known cheat at the collegiate level. Kidd might be of the same mind.

If he perceives that the top Pac12 programs are paying players to come, would he have the patience and fortitude to stay within the rules?

I also wonder if he would get frustrated by Cal's boosted academic requirements (heightened after the APR fiasco a few years ago).

That's a stretch. Would you say the same thing about Shareef? Brian Hendrick?

Lots of speculation, followed by conclusions about Kidd; his coaching chops and personal history. The search is on and if he is on the list, then he should be compared to other candidates and weighed accordingly. It's not hire Kidd or no one else. Unlike others on the list, Kidd has a lot of unique qualifiers - including Cal legend who already has made lots of money in basketball - AND donated significant amounts to the program already.

Maybe he'll give us the alumni discount on salary as long as we pay his assistants competitively. He could also chip in for the facility and put his name on the door or something.

Following Monty's retirement, I was surprised by the Cuonzo hire, but it seemed to be a good one at the time. I have my criticisms of Cuonzo as a coach, but his other issues (like the Bakersfield FU), I have come to accept as a reflection of how much Cal was a 'clown show' at the time (or whatever Shocky was calling it).

Hmmmm......WOuld have to pull the BI history book out but I am not sure we had great names on the list when Monty retired. Getting Martin seemed like Mana from heaven as again, Cal was/is a hard place to sell.

Like most people, they grow and often become more articulate as they mature. He suffers from many of us having watched him for the last 25 years - but mostly in his youth, not recently.

He's plenty articulate. That comes with the territory of having to do pressers throughout his playing and coaching career. Same with Wilcox, he's gotten a lot better. At his first presser for us he looked like a nervous high school kid.

Ironically, that first presser Wyking did as head coach was when he was at his peak. Everyone thought it was engaging, had vision and he was going to bring Louisville west to us. It went downhill from there. He kind of peaked early.
