So someone explain. If Queen is reference to 'gay' it is certainly a no-no, but it it is 'you're playing like a girl" it is OK....Be interesting to see how this plays out down the line. If I call the Queen of England queen, am I saying she's homosexual?
But yah, I would dare say that most coaches of male sports have said some sexist, homophobic or chauvinistic remark at some point. If they deny it they are lying.
Of course, yeah, like he said, maybe it was equally about chess... like when I used to yell at Bobby Knight, "Hey Knight: You're a pawn!" He would get furious.
Either way, it was as weak as can be.
Sorry, but girls do play sports differently than boys.OdontoBear66 said:So someone explain. Actually I did. Northside in Berkeley, Panhandle in SF...then horse at Argonne. I didn't however talk smack or trash. The opposite, said nothing. It's difficult to smack talk a guy who doesn't talk. Give them nothing, also you don't waste time or risk a butt stomping. When you do say something...carries a bit more impact.BeachedBear said:You never played on the playground, did you?Another Bear said:

Seriously, the game has changed and society is slowly adapting to social media and technology that sheds a light brighter then it did in the past. At Harmon, you could sit near the benches and would hear trash talking from coaches, assistants, players AND fans. That was a long time ago and it is now pretty rare and not as gritty.
My favorite overheard from a legendary coach, whose name I won't mention, but his initials were Ralph Miller. Something along the lines of:
"Nice to see you get that shot up. I bet you don't get it up like that for your boyfriend"
How would that play in today's world? At the time (like 1984?) Everyone in the area was whooping it up as a classic.
Bird was the master. And as much as I hate to admit it, Brevan Knight of Furd was also a great trash-talker.Yogi Bear said:I like Larry Bird trash talk. I've had ZERO respect for Rome ever since then. It was so weak, I could never get past it, no matter what else he did. Of course, Everett's best reaction WOULD'VE been to discuss it with him, rather than, "Oh yeah? Callin' me a woman?!?"
Good trash talking is actually an art, especially if you keep it clean. It can be hilarious too, when even the trashed laughs. But sometimes it gets ugly.
True. OTOH, in the 50's it was perfectly acceptable to call people "n----r."BeachedBear said:You never played on the playground, did you?Another Bear said:

I had to honestly think about the first tine I heard queen or was aware of it. Here's the story: my older sister was an art school hipster in SF, ran night clubs in the 80s. Her best friend was a gay man, who did drag...Patsy Cline impersonation that started as an art school joke...but soon they toured, seriously. So while at Cal my sister would invite me to parties, clubs, after-hours stuff...so I'd meet her friends, hang out. Eye opening stuff for a 19-20 y.o. Yes, I had typical young man's homophobia, so I thank my sister. I don't think queen was used then but drag queen was used, or drag. Then it was queen. I don't think I've ever really used it...but I've heard it.OaktownBear said:Honestly, I didn't think he was calling him a flamboyant gay man. I thought he was using the feminine counterpart to his name in other words calling him a girl. (it's still stupid). I thought it was more akin to Cal fans chanting "Cheryl" at Reggie Miller.Another Bear said:Yogi Bear said:What makes you think it was a gay slur?Another Bear said:

This definition works for me.Quote:
In gay slang, queen is a term used to refer to a flamboyant or effeminate gay man. The term can either be pejorative or celebrated as a type of self-identification.

Not where I grew up, or anywhere else I happened to go at the time. The only people who got away with that were of that race talking to others of the same race The people who were not of that race could use the word only in private or among friends of a like mind or persuasion. If they used it in public, in a group including blacks, they usually did so at their own peril.UrsaMajor said:True. I'm fine with trash talking between players and some stuff from coaches but full trashing a player as a coach, punk stuff and I don't care if he's the Wizard of Westwood. Sure some of it's gamesmanship but some of it is authority figure crapping on student athletes. And yes, it was a different era.helltopay1 said:

If you're calling a player a girl or a woman, that's bull. If make a comments like "shtty play there bucko" that's fair. Good trash talking isn't personal, it's about the game or the play. Read up Larry Bird, he basically called his shot and then mocked the opposition...nothing personal.
I looked it up...nothing weird from what I can see.
