The second coming of Ben Braun.

Braun:
Eastern Michigan .584
Cal .587
Rice .330

Fox:
Nevada .741
Georgia .551
Cal ????

Similar trend. From mid-major success, to power conference mediocrity, to ???

It just doesn't feel right. Hope I'm wrong.

Cal has stopped trying to be good at basketball. Amazing how Jim Knowlton screwed up his first big hire.

If fox can take next years team to the sweet 16, I'd be stoked

Ben Braun gets a lot of crap on this board (a lot of it deserved) but he did take the team to 5 tournaments, one sweet 16 and one nit championship. That's way more than fox accomplished at Georgia

I agree Ducky. Didn't really mean to slam Ben, he did have 3 or 4 really good years. But his winning potential was limited, and this seems like the case with Fox.

The scary thing about that comparison, if it comes true here, is that Knowlton is about to spend $10 million to buy the .330 portion of Mark Fox's career.

Braun did well in his first few years at Cal but then inexplicably went downhill. Fox had nine years at Georgia. The team only made the tournament twice and never got past the first round. It only won more than 60% of its games in 2 of 9 seasons. Fox looks less promising than Braun to me.

My point exactly. Hope this isn't the hire.

Braun did a "pretty good" job at Cal. Thing is, when you're AT the pretty good level for years, it ain't good enough. But now that we suck, pretty good looks pretty good.

(Commenting more about Braun than Fox.)

But in this comparison, we are Rice.

Weird weird hire.

I could understand Ben Howland.

I can't understand Fox vis a vis Decuire. Sorry Travis we failed you again. Ugh.

At his peak, Braun was a good recruiter who consistently got teams into the NCAA tournament. During that good stretch, his coaching record is better than any coach since Newell, including Monty. The problem is he dropped off and never recovered, even when we went to another school.

Firing Braun was the right move. Hiring Monty was a great move. What's happened since has been really lousy management by the administration that leads me to believe Cal doesn't really want to win in MBB anymore.

Mark Fox has never had a stretch in his career that comes anywhere close to Braun's good years. He does, however, has some stretches that look a lot like Braun's bad years.

Fox doesn't look like Ben Braun 2.0. He looks like Cuonzo Martin 2.0 but with less recruiting success. Which is another way of saying he's not a good coach.

How do you define "winning potential": Conference? NCAA? Tournament bid? I don't see his prospects as any worse than a lot of guys from lesser conferences whose names were bandied about. Shaka Smart and Andy Enfield have shown it is tougher to go from mid-major to P5 than many assume.

Yes. But I think that is why you hire a guy with DEEP california roots. I know Fox did the whole Reno thing but that is NOT competing in the heart of SOuthern California - where the Bears need to be.

Anyway, I am opting for hope. I did denial, anger, and frustration already.

The espn article quotes Knowlton as saying Fox was clearly better than other candidates during the selection process. That is shades of how we got Gilbertson as football HC. We stiffed Mariucci for Gilbertson because Gilby interviewed better. SMH. Some people interview better than they are
