Why would we not hire a coach Mike Montgomery recommended?

Travis DeCuire.

What is this so difficult?

Speculation: Maybe because he said no? The program is a hot mess, the salary may be limited, and he probably will have better offers. Fox you can pay minimal salaries, as Georgia picks up the rest of the tab so he is paid his annual buy-out amount. See Sonny Dykes.

WIAF, if the salary is that limited they should have kept Jones. If you can't afford a replacement than save the money until you can.

I still have a problem with the notion that Cal can't afford a coach who currently makes $175K.

Montgomery's recommendation might be biased if it's somebody he's had a close relationship with, or from his coaching tree. See Walsh recommending Holmoe as Mooch's replacement... So you can't take his endorsement at face value.

Difference being Walsh coached our rival and didn't give a crap about Cal. Difference being Holmoe was a failed coach and Decuire is a successful one. Difference being no one else lobbied for Holmoe and players and others are coming out of the woodwork to support Decuire. Monty's recommendation isn't a 100%, but it should be given weight.

Actually Monty was also more of a Furd coach, he's had a much longer and more successful tenure there, and Walsh has also coached at Cal.

This being said, I do think that de Cuire would have been a better choice than Fox, I was just pointing out that Montgomery's recommendation does have a built-in bias. If I was the AD though, I would have definitely asked Monty's opinion on all candidates, taking into account any personal bias.

I would hire Decuire over Fox, but according to media reports DeCuire is negotiating a raise and extension with Montana. We may never know, but there is a good chance he turned Cal down.

A coach who tried twice before to come back to Cal, a place he knows, and a coach that has a rebuild job to do in Montana with seniors graduating. It would be hard to believe that Travis rejected Cal.
