Good start. Don't like Trent as a HC, love him as lead assistant.

Let's see how fox fills out the rest of the bench. Hiring someone with cal ties (gates, Theo, etc) would go a long way to ingratiating himself with the fan base

Question (showing my ignorance)

Where did Johnson go after leaving TCU?
If you believe in forever
Then life is just a one-night stand
If there's a rock and roll heaven
Well you know they've got a hell of a band

Looks like he was an assistant at Louisville (sound familiar) and then took a year off? Man we are so magnanimous and charitable. We should call ourselves Second Chance D1 Coachi U.

Cal ties and a bit younger. Trent was actually born in Berkeley (in 1956). Fox's offenses were limited, but what about Trent's?

I'm not sure what his recruiting ability is when not employed by UCLA. Didn't really do anything for us, but he didn't have much to sell either.

I'll leave the comparison of Fox and Trent's offenses up to you.

Too many variables for me.

I got as far as looking up their offensive rankings .when at Nevada...at different times of course. The best ranking of Fox was in his third year 29th. The best ranking of Johnson was in his fourth
and last year 38th.

True. He's "in to see" everybody, but who does he close on (for us)? But getting guys to come here to play for Jones, after the last two years, would have been a tough sell. Hopefully easier with the coaching change.

Does anyone really know what Trent Johnson's recruiting ability is?

I know he bought in the Lopez twins. But how much of that was Johnson and how much was it the twins just wanting to go to furd

The twins would have gone there no matter who their coach was. Their mom was a swimmer at Furd.

Trent Johnson has been Coach of the Year in three conferences:
2003 WAC
2008 Pac-10
2009 SEC

Mark Fox was an assistant under Johnson at Nevada and won Coach of the Year three times:
2005, 2006, 2007

I feel better with Johnson being on board.

Of course, that doesn't magically giveus more depth and rebounding among other things.

May we start out well.

I swear...on the off chance that things don't go well....if someone
refers to Fox as "the guy JK brought in", my head will explode.

And VERY adamant they would only go to Stanford.

With Fox and Johnson you would like to add some young dynamic recruiters who are plugged into the California prep and AAU scene, social media, etc.

Why would Dennis Gates coach here when he just wait for Len Hamilton to keel over?

This is what I don't get. People keep mentioning him as a potential coach and yet he has a sweet gig at FSU. Why in the hell would he come to Cal? Just because you go to a school doesn't automatically tie you to it. I went to Chico and yet here I am. Do I have ANY relationship to Chico State? No. Will I? No.

Yeah, I get it (maybe) if they grew up locally as well (i.e. Jason Kidd) or were attached to the University in another way after playing here (can't think of a Cal example off the top of my head)

1. Normally assistants are guys the head coach is familiar with and there is no indication that there is history there.
2. The story was that 2 years ago Gates virtually blew off the interview. Either he did which at least temporarily burned the bridge, or he didn't and is probably pretty pissed about the portrayal. I could be wrong, but I think time is going to have to heal some wounds there. Especially to make a lateral move
3. He's in a stable job where he is well liked. Why would he make that move? What do we have to offer?

This.

Gates is an assistant coach for an ACC team that made the sweet 16 this season and the elite 8 last season. Don't see why he would voluntarily leave for anything other than (a) a head coaching job, or (b) a job as the top assistant on a team that is an NCAA tournament regular, or (c) maybe a job as an NBA assistant coach.

If we're talking local connections and burned bridges I'll mention Theo Robertson.

There's also the issue of the fact that Fox and Leonard Hamilton play very different styles. Given how long Gates and Hamilton have been together, that's no small thing as that's all he knows. Plus, as you and others have said, there's zero reason for Gates to take essentially a step down to coach for his alma mater when he's well regarded and has a great gig at FSU. He could easily be the Hamilton successor there given that he's 70 now. Time for us to move on.
