Good start. Don't like Trent as a HC, love him as lead assistant.
Let's see how fox fills out the rest of the bench. Hiring someone with cal ties (gates, Theo, etc) would go a long way to ingratiating himself with the fan base
I'm not sure what his recruiting ability is when not employed by UCLA. Didn't really do anything for us, but he didn't have much to sell either.Big C said:

I'll leave the comparison of Fox and Trent's offenses up to you.calumnus said:ducky23 said:

Cal ties and a bit younger. Trent was actually born in Berkeley (in 1956). Fox's offenses were limited, but what about Trent's?

That's better than last.
True. He's "in to see" everybody, but who does he close on (for us)? But getting guys to come here to play for Jones, after the last two years, would have been a tough sell. Hopefully easier with the coaching change.Yogi Bear said:I'm not sure what his recruiting ability is when not employed by UCLA. Does anyone really know what Trent Johnson's recruiting ability is?
I know he bought in the Lopez twins. But how much of that was Johnson and how much was it the twins just wanting to go to furd

The twins would have gone there no matter who their coach was. Their mom was a swimmer at Furd.
My thoughts exactly.helltopay1 said:
johnson is 63??isn't that a little long in the tooth for the recruiting grind??
This is what I don't get. People keep mentioning him as a potential coach and yet he has a sweet gig at FSU. Why in the hell would he come to Cal? Just because you go to a school doesn't automatically tie you to it. I went to Chico and yet here I am. Do I have ANY relationship to Chico State? No. Will I? No.oski003 said:
Why would Dennis Gates coach here when he just wait for Len Hamilton to keel over?
(or retire)
Yeah, I get it (maybe) if they grew up locally as well (i.e. Jason Kidd) or were attached to the University in another way after playing here (can't think of a Cal example off the top of my head)parentswerebears said:This is what I don't get. 1. Normally assistants are guys the head coach is familiar with and there is no indication that there is history there.BeachedBear said:Yeah, I get it (maybe) if they grew up locally as well (i.e. Jason Kidd) or were attached to the University in another way after playing here (can't think of a Cal example off the top of my head)parentswerebears said:This is what I don't get. 3. He's in a stable job where he is well liked. Why would he make that move? What do we have to offer?
If we're talking local connections and burned bridges I'll mention Theo Robertson.OaktownBear said:BeachedBear said:

2. The story was that 2 years ago Gates virtually blew off the interview. Either he did which at least temporarily burned the bridge, or he didn't and is probably pretty pissed about the portrayal. I could be wrong, but I think time is going to have to heal some wounds there.

Gates is an assistant coach for an ACC team that made the sweet 16 this season and the elite 8 last season. Don't see why he would voluntarily leave for anything other than (a) a head coaching job, or (b) a job as the top assistant on a team that is an NCAA tournament regular, or (c) maybe a job as an NBA assistant coach.
