He'll probably end up at Stanfurd.
Not without Vanover. Brown doesn't want to play center.mcdbear said:
We may have a shot at him

Can you link to the twitter video of the new coach's speech that scared him off?
Andre wasn't enough to lure Brown as a frosh, and I don't think he did enough last season to change Brown's mind.btownbear said:
We have a young center in Andre Kelly. (Hold on hope.)

IMHO not enough quickness to play 4, especially on defense. Not enough length or hops to play 5, especially on defense. Better on offense due to skills, better on the boards due to bulk. I think he can help us if he improves as much as Anticevich did.btownbear said:
Well he isn't a 4 in today's game. That much is sure.
Charles Barkley was a back to the basket power forward?ducky23 said:
A couple weeks ago THe Athletic had a really good article about how the traditional 4 (back to the basket, Charles Barkley type) is now obsolete in the nba.
The theory, according to the article, is that in today's game, you can only afford to have one big on the court (due to needing to spread the court on offense and needing to defend more pnrs on defense). So if you can only have one big, a 5 has more utility than a 4. So rather than playing a traditional 4, most teams will play either smaller guys or a stretch 4.
I thought about that, and it's very true. I can't think of a single good traditional 4 in the nba. Blake griffin is probably the closest, but even he has developed and outside shot.
And this is gojng to be the problem for a guy like Kelly. His best attribute is his low post game, but the game has gone away from that style of play. And as another poster stated, he's too slow to guard pnrs and not tall/springy enough to be a rim protecter. So he's an absolute liability on defense and (since he can't shoot threes) he basically clogs the lane on offense.
Vanover on the other hand has way more utility since he can block shots and shoot threes.

Could Kelly be a Lampley type player?
Right now, he's David Paris, but he doesn't have to stay David Paris.BeachedBear said:BeachedBear said:If he was as talented and athletic as Lampley, sure. Honestly, I see him more as a poor man's Leonard Taylor.bluehenbear said:

Yes. That's a better comparison.Big C said:Right now, he's David Paris, but he doesn't have to stay David Paris.BeachedBear said:BeachedBear said:If he was as talented and athletic as Lampley, sure. Honestly, I see him more as a poor man's Leonard Taylor.bluehenbear said:

Yep, David Paris is a good comparison. I'm going to be an optimist and say that Kelly has some baby fat, something he could get away with in HS, but not at Cal. When you're that age, it's not too hard to change things with a program to follow and a little discipline. Cut back on the carbs, lots of protein and vegetables, and running the fire trail a few times a week will do wonders. Then some weight training. Oh, to be 20 again. . . Running the fire trail on a summer morning, maybe the closest thing to heaven on earth.BeachedBear said:Yes. Ha, reallly, could it have gone worse? Well, I guess he could have come to Cal. Can't say we are in a much better spot. Oh ya, we have the degree.concordtom said:
Wow.
Jordan Brown to Neveada was a TOTAL BUST!!!
1. He got very little playing time.
2. They did not do well in the tournament, whereas some were calling they a final four darkhorse or sleeper.
3. His coach (Musselman) has left for another program.
Could it have gone worse?
Injury
Flunk out
In other words, no, not really.
And now he's gonna have to sit out a year as a transfer? When people were concerned he'd be a one and done at Cal?
Give me a break!!!
I think it would be great if he came to Cal, but I bet he goes back east. I dunno why I say that, other than after a year under his belt, proximity to home is less important than saving his pro hoops career, and there are more numerous opportunities in the east than west, (it's a population thing).
Allow me to finish your sentence:Big C said:
If Jordan Brown had come to Cal, he would've gotten a TON of minutes in his first year. Then, if he continued to improve in his sophomore season, maybe he could be a two-and-done. Now, unless he gets some sort of waiver, the best he can probably hope for is to be a three-and-done.
Lesson for the top prep players (unless you're "sure-fire", one of the few Zion Williamsons of the world): Come to Cal!
Okay, not entirely untrue, but I'd prefer to put a positive spin on it. Leave out the "we suck" part, keep in theconcordtom said:Allow me to finish your sentence:Big C said:

"...because we suck so bad you'll have no competition at your position (or teammates in general) - all the minutes you can muster!"
he really should hang out with #59 jK this summer who is in Berkeley who is the epitome of health...but the team has zero leaders and whatever scintilla of mature leadership was there is evaporating. I gdamn guarantee you Jk never fell asleep in a meeting.HearstMining said:Yep, David Paris is a good comparison.
