When I attended we preferred "Berkeley" because it was associated with this:

...and anything that terrorized and put fear in the heart's of our parents' generation (like Chairman Mao and Che posters on the walls of our room) was a good thing. "Cal" was what my Mom called it (Class '42). I switched to Cal once I became a productive member of society.
