The Athletic has a nice article up this morning on Dennis Gates and his start at Cleveland State.
Dennis Gates Article

Quote:

He was beloved in Tallahassee, not just because of his work with the basketball team but also through how much he made himself a part of the campus. Gates mentored athletes from all sports, and he impacted another group of students as the faculty adviser for Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
He loves being part of the college community and has shown that already at Cleveland State, where he has somehow found time to ingratiate himself despite his crammed schedule.

"In the first couple of weeks, he showed up at a soccer scrimmage and a volleyball practice," Garrett says. "He came into the athletic department offices and introduced himself to everyone. No one asked him to do those things. He's just a genuine, high-character guy who's thoughtful about the visibility and responsibility that the men's basketball program has."

I wonder if the search firm looked at Gates in their 2 day (?) search? Probably not, he did not fit the AD's stated requirement.

Whenever we are next looking for a HC, I hope Gates is st the top of the list.

Yes, hopefully he does well at CS and gets in enough time as a HC to make him viable on paper and if Fox doesn't produce we can bring him home.

Why? He has no head coach experience.

Yes, so with time we'll have a better notion of his coaching abilities.

I might also add that he has shown little inclination to come back here or even to the West Coast.

Most population and thus most jobs is east of Mississippi River. Consider that before holding it against a guy.

Just pointing it out.

If Gates blows up at Cleveland St., he's going to have higher profile opportunities than Cal.
