He was beloved in Tallahassee, not just because of his work with the basketball team but also through how much he made himself a part of the campus. Gates mentored athletes from all sports, and he impacted another group of students as the faculty adviser for Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
He loves being part of the college community and has shown that already at Cleveland State, where he has somehow found time to ingratiate himself despite his crammed schedule.
"In the first couple of weeks, he showed up at a soccer scrimmage and a volleyball practice," Garrett says. "He came into the athletic department offices and introduced himself to everyone. No one asked him to do those things. He's just a genuine, high-character guy who's thoughtful about the visibility and responsibility that the men's basketball program has."
