Nice win for Fox and the Bears! Really a nice game to watch. Monty sure had some nice things to say (as opposed to the football announcers for P12 Cal games who make me hit the mute button they're so awful)

Good way to start the season! Go Bears!

This is what we haven't in in a LONG time: A feaking MBB coach who knows what he's doing. An outright pleasure to see.
I forgot how much I love watching decently coached Cal basketball. The telling will be Fox's ability to recruit but my GOODNESS they looked SO much better coached.

So, Pepperdine's star Ross only had two points in the second half?

Yup. They did a great job in figuring out the pick and roll he tried to run. I want to go back but I also think they were forcing him to go to his left more.

Paris woke up after half

Paris is what deangelo Russell is to the warriors. Dubs are probably marginally better with him. But he's a poor defender and too ball dominant. But he can do stuff no one else on the roster can do.
That is an (not surprisingly) awful take. Austin is nowhere near an all-conference player offensively, while Russell is.

BTW, I told you we should check out what Paschall could do. Still want Covington?

You know what.? After 2 years of HORRIBLE basketball, no coaching and no joy I am going to celebrate that MONTY saw Paris play a great game and said so - numerous times. I will go with him. #goParis #o-town #teamhope

I wish I could have seen the game. Things sound encouraging under the new staff.

That was a solid first game. Its so nice to see an offense being run and consistency on defense. Who knew that those things matter. The players seem well-conditioned as well.

Nice win but IMHO we have a long way to go. I thought the difference was conditioning, our guys looked fresher in the second half.

To my eyes Kelly looked like our most improved player. Last season I wondered if he would ever be ready to play but he's in much better shape and showed significant skills. Bradley is a beast and South can play, good to have them together. I think Thiemann and Brown showed plenty of potential. Klonaras only played a few minutes, too few for me to form any opinions. Thorpe and Kuany didn't play at all.

I saw little evidence of organization at either end. On offense we did pass the ball around but most baskets came from individual moves. 12 assists on 31 baskets won't get it done every night. I'd call our man defense marginal to fair, the few possessions we tried zone I'd call horrible. Perhaps at this point the coaches are working on more on motivation, team spirit, and conditioning than on tactics.

stu, I'm glad you're setting the bar high, but being at the game, my overwhelming takeaway was that we're much improved

Agreed on Paris play, i went with a couple of ex players who were extremely complementary on Austin's play. He broke down defenses, passed well and the team was clearly better with him running the point. Brown will be excellent in time and has the higher upside, but Austin is a better decision maker and gets key players involved.

Yes, and both of those points were on free throws. After scoring 17 in the first half, he didn't score from the floor in the second half.

Where did I compare austin's offensive skills to russell's?

Anyways, you and I have extremely different opinions on deangelo russell's value.

Enjoy watching Russell play this year.

I was down on Paris in the first half. Didn't seem like his head was in the game. A few of his passes were lazy and almost got stolen (would have been unforced turnovers as they were simple passes going no where). He made another lazy pass, it was stolen and the took it down court, scored and were fouled

He also forced some drives into traffic

Then Paris woke up in the second half and was a completely different player, driving and scoring, and driving and some deft passing/assists

I agree we're much improved, I think last year we lose this game. I'm just cautiously optimistic because I'm not willing to extrapolate too far from only two data points: one so-so half against a so-so opponent and one very good half against a so-so opponent.

Also I expect to see growing pains from a relatively young team with a new coaching staff. Our 8-player rotation included 1 grad (no Cal experience), 1 senior (1 year of Cal experience), 1 junior, 3 sophs (1 who barely played while recovering from a serious injury), and 2 freshies. After those 8 we have 1 oft-injured junior, more freshies, and walk-ons.

52 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists tonight compared to Covington's 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Yes, yes I did enjoy watching him play.
