Uh, Muss prolly never wanted the job and was using Cal to do just that -- parlay a raise. At the first sniff Muss wouldn't be interested in an offer, Cal saved face by telling media they never offered him a contract. Cal is just like its fans, the loser guy who rejects women before they can reject them so he never has to say he was dumped or looked over.

If this wasn't the case, why in the world wouldn't Cal be falling over themselves to hire Musselman? The rationalizing of Musselman not being a slam dunk hire, a hire Cal never has been able to land (given his resume), is truly remarkable to observe.

Based on what? Him being fired (but also rehired) from two HC jobs in the NBA? Because he doesn't stay places long? Where has he "lost support"? Or is this just another attempt at rationalizing the absurd "not wanting" of a candidate with a resume that Cal normally would never have a shot at? The ambivalence of fans towards the school's interest or lack therof in Muss seems in part ignorance and in part saving face.

The only time I ever closely followed what he was doing was when he was HC for the Warriors. First year: Hey, this guy can coach pretty well!. Second year: We're sick of this guy. IIRC, he didn't last all the way through the second season. Nobody wanted him around anymore.

That's what they say about him: At first, good, but, fairly quickly, something about him wears on everybody (kinda like Harbaugh, though JH is a great enough coach to last longer).

His resume is exceptional in that he never seems to stay in one place for very long.

All that said, two years of him would've been better than the last two years w/Jones (well, unless it would've put us on probation or something).

Coaches and management disagreeing in pro sports is like the sun coming up. He wanted to play veterans over younger players, what a travesty. Warriors had a dysfunctional management team, and he was fired because Mullin wanted his own guy after Muss' second year. Even the icompetent St Jean loved him as a coach, but two egos don't mesh well together. Musselman, by both his and Arenas' admission, had a great relationship. Muss finished second to Greg Pop in COY in his first season at age 36, repeated similar success in year 2 despite being without Arenas.

Being fired in the NBA is neither inherently an indictment of one's coaching ability or character. Moreover, firing Muss was incredibly stupid, but in all fairness Muss' style and disciplinarian approach is best suited for college. The circumstances of his Warriors tenure only spoke poorly of the Warriors org potential for success, not Muss' potential as a HC.

Cal is in no position to be dismissive of a candidate with Muss' reputation or resume. His biggest career mistake was not entering the college ranks sooner. He can be the CEO of a college program, not muddled by the differing philosophies on personnel etc with people who think they know better than the coach. It would be, to be fair, so CAL to actually not want him under some guised self-importance regarding "fit".

I really don't think so, unfortunately. Anybody who can win while operating within the rules of the university and NCAA is a good fit. Anybody who can't win ... is a bad fit anywhere.
