I love the Bobby D group helicopter stomping. Is there any act that defines cowardice more clearly than that? One on one (and probably even two at a time) those dudes would be crying for mercy and their mothers.

Could these students be suspended in CA under the new laws?

I see no evidence from the video that the game has gotten rougher, but the video suggests that, in rare instances, the ride home may be rougher.

In the old days there were a number of bad apples who hit below the belt or above the neck. Jim Luscotoff and Bill Laimbeer come to mind. When our guys played rough, (such as Tom Meschery) he was called an "Enforcer"

The game goes in cycles. It was really rough in my father's day (1930s), but was pretty tame when I played in the 1950s. Hardly any injuries, especially from contact. Not like now anyway, when often a quarter or more of any rotation can be out with an injury or playing hurt, some it caused by rough physical play. I think it has become a bit less rough over the last few years, though, with the rule changes regarding charging, and so on.

I remember playing in a Rec league and we went across town to play a game. We won by a point, and the other team jumped us in the locker room, They doused the lights and attacked us with church keys. Luckily our coach was much bigger and stronger than all those kids and when he started tossing them around, the fight ended. Another time in the CYO league, we beat St Patricks by a bundle at our place, but at their place we won by only a point. As we were getting into our cars, they pelted us with rocks and bricks. Luckily no one got hurt.

Ralph Ogden was also a counselor. Both very nice people.

I remember listening to a Warriors-Pistons game on the radio in the early 1960s. A fight broke out between the Pistons' Bob Ferry, 6-8 and 230 pounds, and the Warriors' Al Attles, 6-0 and 175 pounds. Wilt thought the fight too one-sided, so he went over and picked up the 230 lb Ferry, and tossed him 6 or 7 rows up into the stands. Fight over.

IMHO it is a disadvantage to be too tall in boxing. Punching up has more power than punching down and you have a whole lot of body to protect when you are real tall. Once you are a certain height and weight you are big enough to fight anyone. Lennox Lewis is the tallest of the decent boxers that come to mind (6'5).
Wilt wouldn't have lasted one round with Ali or any of the other good heavyweights of the era. I think it was Joe Walcott that said, "The bigger they are the harder they fall."

At one point there was a promotion for a title fight in Madison Square Garden between Wilt and Muhammad Ali. Jim Brown was to be Wilt's manager. In an interview with Jim Brown, Brown said that when Wilt and Ali showed up with their managers for the promotion, Ali's manager took one look at how much bigger and taller a man Wilt was than Ali, he and Ali backed out of the fight, saying that he didn't think Ali could land a punch on Wilt's chin.

The McGregor vs Mayweather "fight" was also a carnival sideshow to relieve the naive of their cash. With MMA rules Mayweather wouldn't have lasted a round because even the best boxer that ever lived couldn't prevent being clinched and brought down, where he would be helpless against a grappler. Plus Conor could have kicked him. Likewise, using boxing rules, like they did, McGregor shouldn't have lasted a round but Mayweather sparred with him to give people their perceived money's worth. Those MMA guys are pretty sketchy stand up fighters compared to seasoned professional boxers. When it comes to the public: Never give a sucker an even break.


* I was surprised to learn that the current WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World, Deontay Leshun Wilder, is 6'7.

My daughter played hoop from 1st grade through high school and was bloodied many times. It is my position is that women's hoop rewards over aggressive play due to the refs swallowing their whistles all too often because if they called all the legitimate fouls that take place both teams would foul out by halftime. I'm surprised these type of brawls don't happen more often.

*Any woman trained in boxing could have taken out 10 easily.
