In the old days there were a number of bad apples who hit below the belt or above the neck. Jim Luscotoff and Bill Laimbeer come to mind. When our guys played rough, (such as Tom Meschery) he was called an "Enforcer"MSaviolives said:
I see no evidence from the video that the game has gotten rougher, but the video suggests that, in rare instances, the ride home may be rougher.
Thanks Bearister. I hadn't heard a lot of this before, especially about Carlos Ogden, Sr. Kudos to him for his service and sacrifice.bearister said:
This one is for you SFCB. I remember when I read this story in 1977 that I was particularly interested in the excerpts about Dennis Awtrey because in the summer of 1967 when he was a incoming freshman at Santa Clara he was one of our camp counselors at the Santa Clara University Sports and Coaching Camp. Ralph Ogden was also a counselor. Both very nice people.

Dennis, Ralph and Bud Ogden as NBA players (the father of the Ogden's, Carlos Ogden, Sr., was awarded the Medal of Honor, 3 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star Medal in connection with his service in WWII).

Wilt Chamberlain was an enforcer, but I don't think he had many or maybe even any fights. He usually just used words, gestures, or a look.
I remember listening to a Warriors-Pistons game on the radio in the early 1960s. A fight broke out between the Pistons' Bob Ferry, 6-8 and 230 pounds, and the Warriors' Al Attles, 6-0 and 175 pounds. Wilt thought the fight too one-sided, so he went over and picked up the 230 lb Ferry, and tossed him 6 or 7 rows up into the stands. Fight over.
Who in their right mind would have gotten into a fight with Wilt?SFCityBear said:

At one point there was a promotion for a title fight in Madison Square Garden between Wilt and Muhammad Ali. Jim Brown was to be Wilt's manager. In an interview with Jim Brown, Brown said that when Wilt and Ali showed up with their managers for the promotion, Ali's manager took one look at how much bigger and taller a man Wilt was than Ali, he and Ali backed out of the fight, saying that he didn't think Ali could land a punch on Wilt's chin.UrsaMajor said:when Wilt retired, he insisted that he could have been heavyweight champion of the world if he decided to go into boxing.SFCityBear said:

Ali would have literally murdered him. That was a circus stunt like the boxing career of Too Tall Jones and when Ali "fought" the Japanese wrestler.
By way of example (yes, it is an over simplification), here is Stefan Struve, Dutch MMA fighter demonstrating that being 6'11 doesn't provide much of a guaranty in the ring:
*Struve has more fighting skills than Wilt had and that guy chopping him down is no Ali.

if You want to see rough, now this is rough. This is from a women's game between Texas Southern and Alabama State.
Even more insane than the fight was the fact that the longest suspension was TWO games.

When I was old enough to know a little of women, I made a vow to try never to make a woman mad. So far it is working out.bearister said:TheSouseFamily said:

Moderators, please transfer the above comment, as well as my comment, to the Women's Basketball Board.
My daughter played hoop from 1st grade through high school and was bloodied many times. It is my position is that women's hoop rewards over aggressive play due to the refs swallowing their whistles all too often because if they called all the legitimate fouls that take place both teams would foul out by halftime. I'm surprised these type of brawls don't happen more often.
