Here is a list of Cal's best basketball players listed by their uniform number. In case of multiple players for a given number, I listed the best player first in order. I have a bias toward some of the older players, because many of them won championships, conference titles or an NCAA title, any of which may be harder to do today, but I still feel these players should get some respect for being the best teams of their day. All comments are welcome;

Hi SF City,

Denny Fitzpatrick's roster number for sure was 22 and I remember watching the two playoff games at the cow palace for the 1958-1959 season. Al Buch's was 23 in case you might want to include him as well. I believe that Charlie Johnson's roster number was 5 but I am not certain of that one.

I believe Butch Hays wore No. 11. We were Cal freshmen the same year.

I vaguely recall that Kevin Johnson had No. 3 his freshman year, when Butch Hays was a senior. (I could be wrong about that as it's going on 40 years ago.)

Other notables: Wes Howell, Sam Potter, the recently departed Eddie Javius (maybe #33 [?], an icon because of the photo of him sitting on the rim after ending The Streak against UCLA) ...

I could solve some of these number questions by looking in old programs I've saved, but I don't have access to them right this minute.

Thanks Kelly09.

Gabe played three years for the Bears basketball team, and started at guard alongside Earl Robinson in 1956 and 1957, going to the Western Regional Finals in 1957. He also played quarterback on the football team. I don't have his basketball number, but he was #20 in football. He passed away too young,at age 39. SFCity: I'm pretty sure that Charlie (aka Charles, akaCJ) Johnson wore number 20. And in my humble opinion, he was an EXCELLENT player. Of course, most know that he later was part of the 1975 Warriors championship team.

Also I would bet even money (not a real big sum), that CJ's teamate for 3 years, Jackie Ridgle actually wore number 30.

I'm pretty sure about these because the late 60's/early 70's was when I really started following Cal Basketball closely. Ridgle was only 6-5 but was a real glass eater I think it was their first year as sophomores when they took UCLA to overtime at Harmon.

The year after came Phil Chenier and Ansley Truitt. And then John Coughran. If Cal only had a better coach! Talent wise, I can't imagine another team with 5 players as talented as these guys who didn't play in the NCAA tournament. Of course in those days you could only make the tournament by winning the Pac8 and with UCLA there it just wasn't going to happen.

Go Bears! Stay safe everyone.

Rick Barry is a good friend of mine.He and CJ stayed close right up to CJ's death. I was privileged to have dinner with them one night in the City. In retirement CJ went out on the bay fishing just about every day Totally loved his retirement. He was a real sweetheart.
Loved Cal.
Rick also took me to lunch one day with Dr Bob Albo. Fun day. Rick had no idea that his friend, Dr Bob, ever played college basketball. It was one time Rick was at a loss for words. You would have loved it SFCB. Bob and I were engrossed in Cal basketball. He updated me on post Cal days of Larry Horan, Bob Matheny and Dick Tamberg.

Re: CJ...that is a wonderful report about CJ, Rick Barry.

CJ was my favorite; those jump shots from corner and behind the line of the basket.....a great long jumper from Ravenswood I believe

Wasn't he #10 @ Cal and 20 in NBA?

He was also the starting guard for. Bullets championship team.

I wish I had been a fly on the wall, as they say, for that lunch. I go to Cal games sometimes with a high school teammate of mine who went to Stanford and became a psychiatrist. He and Dr. Albo worked together on a number of cases and became friends. I think Albo may have convinced my friend to renounce his allegiance to Stanford and become a rabid Cal fan. Also, Bob Albo besides being a very good basketball player, was the also the starting catcher on the Cal baseball team, back when real men played at least two sports.

I'm sure everyone who played with CJ, or watched him play, or knew him at all really respects and misses him immensely. A great Golden Bear, and a great Warrior as well.

You made more comments critical of Jamison, over on the Football Board, and I replied to them there.

As to #52, well, I set the rules for the original post, and the only qualification required is that the player have worn a particular number. A player's actual ability was not a criteria, only his reputation among the fans here on the BI was considered, and I ranked the players as first best, second best, etc to wear that number, based on my own heavily biased opinions. If the Water Boy had been given a number as a team member, I'd rank him vs other team members who wore that same number.

Jamison is the best I ever saw wearing #52, as I don't remember and couldn't find anyone else who had worn that number. I will rest my case, until you or someone else comes up with a better Cal player who wore #52.

PS. One of my all-time favorites is Bak Bak, #15 (who could eat Ryan Jamison alive), but a similar player whom many fans ridiculed. However there were 3 more talented players to wear #15, so I didn't mention him in the list. Here is a Cal highlight reel of Bak. At about 2:40 into the video, Bak, who is right-handed, made what looks like a left-handed jumper from about 12 feet! Incredible!

I think CJ was #10 with the Warriors but I'm sticking with #20 from Cal. I believe he inherited it from Russ Critchfield. Speaking of Critchfield, his scoring average would be WAY higher if they had the 3 point line back then.

I didn't have Ubaka on my original list, because all I could remember was how he put me to sleep with all his dribbling around in circles on the perimeter. But I think he was the best free throw shooter in the clutch that I've ever seen at Cal. In a tight game in the final minute, I can't remember him ever missing a free throw. He had ice in his veins. And his overall game improved year to year, so I agree. He belongs on the list.

I've added Benson, Austin, and Sueing. I left Sueing off, mainly due to his change in attitude, but that may be unfair, he did score points, and so I added him. I've added all the ones that fans requested, because I want everyone to be happy. I aim to please, and not be too judgmental.

I will leave Powers on, because I liked him. He did all that he was asked to do. Do you remember when Crabbe got hurt and played 10 minutes up in Seattle against UW, and scored only two points, and Powers came off the bench for 13 points? The next night against WSU, Crabbe was unable to play, and Powers started and got 14 points. He could shoot, and I like shooters. He shot threes at 39.4% at Cal, shooting 46,2% as a senior. He did little else, but he did improve enough to be able to play a few minutes and not hurt the team, and maybe make some threes. As a senior, he scored 18 against Furman on 6 out of 7 on his threes, 14 against OSU on 4 out of 6 threes in Corvallis, and 12 against UW, on 3 out of 4 threes. If only he could have done more than shoot.

I think Suzy's kid was the best free throw shooter in the clutch. I guess the transfer worked out for him, sort of. But, I doubt we will ever see him walk the sidelines for Cal. His only visit will be as coach of a visitor's team. Plus DeCuire owns him!

If only he could have done more than shoot.
thanks for adding the 3, including Sueing as I can tell you didn't really want to

as for powers, good to be inclusive, but besides those two games, he did little else, and was a horrible defender. There are twenty players that are not on the list more deserving them him. But it's all good. I'd rather debate adding players than removing players

Don't see Ayinde Ubaka #1 or RIchard Midgely (unsure of #)

Edited Oops see Richard Midgely already listed #15
I didn't have Ubaka on my original list, because all I could remember was how he put me to sleep with all his dribbling around in circles on the perimeter. But I think he was the best free throw shooter in the clutch that I've ever seen at Cal. In a tight game in the final minute, I can't remember him ever missing a free throw. He had ice in his veins. And his overall game improved year to year, so I agree. He belongs on the list.
I think Suzy's kid was the best free throw shooter in the clutch. I guess the transfer worked out for him, sort of. But, I doubt we will ever see him walk the sidelines for Cal. His only visit will be as coach of a visitor's team. Plus DeCuire owns him!
Ya got me here, NC. I've racked my fading memory, but can't figure out who Suzy's kid is. The one Cal player as good or better than Ubaka making free throws in the clutch that I can come up with is Jerome Randle,

Good call. Works for me, except he wore #13 at Cal. I'll add him.

Great. At least that fills in one of your numeric gaps!

As of right now, the luckiest number for a big man seems to be #44, and the luckiest number for players other than a big man seems to be #3 or #23. Further bulletins as they break.
