Looks like we have our PF. Impressive offer sheet on 247: Miami, CU GT, Oklahoma and Texas among others. We're not even listed. How did we even get this kid? We knows more about him?

wow! Quite an interesting turn of events. I knew he had a Cal offer according to Rivals, but had no idea we were still recruiting him.

Four star prospect on Rivals

had a "serious car accident" . We'll have to follow his play this year.

According to the San Diego Trib, he had this accident in March, where a car swerved in front of him and he hit the guardrail, and then as he was leaving his car, he was hit by one, or maybe two vehicles. He was arrested by the police for a DUI, and then released to the hospital for treatment of a collapsed lung and other injuries. According to one website, his ranking dropped at the end of summer from #16 to #28, maybe due to lack of up to date information on his condition and readiness to play again after the accident.

I am also curious as to why he is listed now as a PF, whereas he was listed earlier as a SF. At 6-7 and 215, he is undersized for a PF, so could it be that he does not yet have an outside shot, which is almost a necessity for a SF these days, and the scouts may have felt he would be better suited to PF? If he is to play PF, he will probably need to grow some and/or put on some weight.

I also wonder why UCLA showed no interest in him, being so nearby in San Diego. Maybe they only chase 5-stars these days, and not 4-stars, or maybe they are all set at forward for the next few years.

His videos show a lot of athleticism, and I look forward to seeing more of his play.

All the issues surrounding his accident, undoubtedly, cooled his recruiting attention even though he was once ranked in the top quarter of players in his class in the nation. Looking over his performance videos, Anyanwu appears to be a strong and athletic 6'7" and 215lb forward. He possesses a good-looking jumper with range out-to-the-perimeter. His handles get him to the hoop from the perimeter where he finishes with a flourish. His strength enables him to score and defend in the low block. Anyanwu seems to have a high hoops IQ. His skills have evidently been developed in good HS competition in San Diego, and through the AAU circuit with his team in Vegas. His game appears somewhat similar to Andre Kelly, who's currently on the Bear roster as a PF, where as Anyanwu may project as a SF under Fox.

With the roster now full for this year and next, it looks like Fox is happy enough with the centers he has now, Thiemann and Thorpe, for the next two years to forego picking up another big man. I hope he's seen some good development from both of them, or we will be playing a little smaller much of the time. That is fine against some teams, but not as much against teams with established big men. I do like the looks of the depth we have at the wings. Point guard still a question mark, and that is crucial to team success.

Alajiki and Anyanwu (wow, imagine if Starkey were still doing hoops) seem to be about the same size. Anybody want to compare/contrast their skill sets?

I'll be happy to as soon as I get sober.

He has to be more athletic than Kelly. Kelly can't play SF.

Based solely on his name (and knowing nothing about him), I wonder if he comes from a family of immigrants who prize education. If so, that could help explain why he chose Cal. Our alma mater is the pre-eminent academic institution on the West Coast (if not the world).

I think Fox wants to clearly hold a spot wide open for BOD center Jalen Lewis in 2022. 5 stars, #2 Center in the country, top player in California. He is the type of player that could catapult the program so Fox is smart to go all in on him. Helps if the center position is wide open.

Same is probably true of Mahaney at PG.

It's Mahaney. I watched them (and Bowser and Roberson) play against each other at the MLK Classic at St Mary's College in January. Mahaney looked good but his shot was a bit off in that game. Lewis was a total stud and BOD won the game on his mid-range jump shot with time expiring. Fun game to watch, with at least two, and hopefully four future Golden Bears!

Sounds like a plan. I always felt that Cuonzo did not really have a plan for Cal, recruiting for need and for depth at all 5 positions. and if he did, it was not readily apparent. I felt the same about Wyking, maybe more so. I like where the roster is heading now, and I also like that Fox's recruits include surprises, players whom no one or maybe a few knew he might be recruiting, from both players who are known and ranked, and players who are under the radar and unranked.

Yeah, that was downright cool how we got Anyanwu. Like when you find cash you weren't expecting in the pocket of an old pair of pants!
