Good game by the lads, just too many turnovers. Who knew Thiemann could dunk? I damn near fell off the couch when I saw that!!

I love Matt, but he needs to rest the step-back 3 for awhile. He is 1 for 8 tonight on 3s, and 2 for 25 for the season. I think last season he was more a a catch and shoot 3 point shooter and was deadly
funny, last season I said that Bradley needed to learn the step back three (although I wasn't referring to 3 point shot step backs)

at his size he needs that to make space

I still think he needs it as he tends to charge when he drives hard, so it should work well to get open mid-range jumpers. And there will be a game where he will need that step back 3 to win the game winning shot with the clock winding down

(but I get your point)

BS call on Kelly
Pac-12 basketball officiating is just as suspicious as Pac-12 football officiating.
the worst call was on the fast break layup by bentley

Good effort by Cal on defense but Matt Bradley is a turnover machine on offense, right now.. 20 turnovers is never acceptable especially when 75% of them were unforced. We were fortunate that Arizona State was missing two good players but I thought that we played well in the first half. Remi Martin, as is usually the case, was the difference in Berkeley again. Hope that we can play a cleaner game against UCLA on Sunday and that Foreman, Betley, Grant and Matt can shoot a decent percentage from the 3 point line. Go Bears.
yeah, Matt had way too many turnovers, but the bad turnovers were our PG's completely unforced turnovers

he was getting tentative with ASU's aggressive defense, but we need our PG to be safer with the ball

the killer was the last one when Cal still had a chance. We hit a 3 there, and we'd be right back in the game even with only 20 seconds on the clock

this has been a problem for him this season. gotta clean that up

Betley gave Martin two lazy passes for easy buckets. Those were back breakers. 4 points off unforced errors late in the game.

Our guys played a very good game tonight against one of the better teams in the conference. The difference was ASU's depth versus Cal's. The ASU bench scored 22 points and the Cal bench scored only 6. That 16 point difference was just impossible to overcome. Woods alone scored 9 points off the ASU bench. Our starting 5 beat the Arizona starting 5 by a score of 56 to 48.

Yeah, I've never seen a 7 footer have to work so hard to dunk, but that is what he has to do.

Nice take by Joel Brown he has to attack the basket. But FT ugh.

I have never understood how college players can't make free throws. My kids rarely missed in CYO games from 6th grade on.
CYO players don't exert themselves nearly as much as collegiate players do. Fatigue usually plays a role in altering ft's.

So are you saying as among college players the better FT shooters are in better cardiovascular condition? I'm passing on that purchase.
The best ft shooters tend to be able to maintain their form despite fatigue

I realize you have a valid point. But I think it may have been J Kidd that said that with FT shooting you are either naturally good at it or you have to work at it. Karl Malone went from making less than 50% of his FT's to having 3 seasons in a row late in his career at 79%. He practiced.
Just referencing the comparison between CYO and collegiate. Most of these guys can hit a high percentage in practice or in a light scrimmage comparable to CYO ball.
Frank Allocco taught me most of what I know about shooting. I remember this from him about FT shooting (paraphrasing from memory).

Good FT shooting consists of form, practice and stamina (which I believe is MBs point). The stamina part also includes a mental focus aspect - especially when gassed and game is on the line. WRT practice - he was profoundly amazed at how little time is spent on practicing free throws - especially at the HS and college level. Some teams do practice FTs - and he claimed that their %s are higher. Most important however, were his comments on form.

Based on his experience, he felt that good FT shooting form is established pretty young - as soon as players have enough strength to be consistent (i.e. middle school or early HS). Although he admitted that players can and do adjust their basic form - he thought it was actually very rare at the HS or college level. I would have to agree, based on my observations.

Yeah, I've never seen a 7 footer have to work so hard to dunk, but that is what he has to do.
Also, he traveled. He caught the ball, took a little hop, then dunked. He needs to work on some combination of lower body strength and footwork so that he can catch and go up quickly rather than traveling or taking a minute to gather himself before going up.

Ouch, looks like Bagley tore an Achilles.

"After the game, head coach Bobby Hurley said the medical staff believes it is a left calf injury and that it is not "catastrophic."
