Watched end again. Refs missed a USF backcourt violation. Good thing Cal won anyway.

Next up is a trip to Boston College, who with a 1-5 record albeit with a very tough schedule. BC did beat a Rhode Island team coming off a 21-9 season. But all five Ls were to Power Five or Big East teams including Syracuse and Villanova.

Great pass by Anticevich. Lots of players would have shot it there instead and he had the presence of mind to know how much time was left and find Foreman.

I'm hearing there's a chance we don't go. I think that may be better. Get Hyder more practice reps. Don't travel cross country now.

Yeah, probably a good sign for team chemistry that, first, Bradly gave up the ball and then GA passed it to one of the new grad transfers. People have been wondering how the individuals have been blending.

Trying to guard someone walking through the key after picking up his dribble is a challenge.

USF starting to look a bit cheap shotish to me. First Bradley injury then Kelly pushed down after the play. The replays are revealing about USF.
How do they not go to the replay on Bradley not being given a chance to land.

If memory serves, defenders of Klay Thompson and Steph Curry have used that deliberate "step into the landing area" technique to knock them out of games with ankle sprains. They consider it well worth the foul and then appear incredulous when anyone suggests it was intentional. USF had a few dirty players. Dzmitri pushed Kelly down long after a play and he intended to swat Grant in the face during a layup but he missed.

Shouldn't be doing that during a pandemic.

I love the way Monty said "Count it," before Foreman's shot arrived and dropped.
Forman's shot brought to mind a story a buddy told me about seeing Rick Barry in a game in Cleveland where Barry was stinking the place up....but he demanded the ball for the last shot and he won the game. That is the sign of a true shooter. You can't kill their confidence (many good players want nothing to do with taking the buzzer shot).

Makale was 0-5 from the arc with 0 points when he took that shot. SHOOTERS GONNA SHOOT!

I hope this terrific shot will get Foreman's three point stroke going. He has underperfomed a little on threes so far.

3pt% 2020 and last season if at Cal
Brown 3/6 .600 .308
Foreman 15/46 .336
Anticevich 8/25 .320 .366
Betley 13/43 .302
Bradley 10/36 .278 .384

Foreman has been our best volume shooter. Brown has actually been good and needs to shoot it if they leave him open. Betley has dropped off from early season. Bradley and Anticevich need to get back to the 3 pt shooting excellence they demonstrated last year. You would think that the addition of two good 3pt shooters would help them get better looks. The above is actually promising, the team clearly has realistic room for improvement.

What I said was that Foreman had underperformed a little on threes so far. First I will say that 7 games most likely means very little in terms of how good a player is or will become this season.
.
2019-20 season, at Stonybrook, he shot threes at 0.360. This season at Cal he is shooting them at 0.326
Last season, over the first 7 games, he had only one below average (.333) games, and shot threes at 0.397.
This season at Cal, over the first 7 games, he had 4 below average (.333) games, and shot threes at 0.326

As to Brown, to me he looks no better or worse shooting threes than he did last season. His shot is a little unorthodox and the shots are not pretty, even when they go in. Last season, as you remember, some folks were wild about him going 3-3 in early game. Even he was exuding confidence when he said he was feeling it on the long bomb off the backboard or the one that bounced high off the rim and dropped in. He only made 8 threes all year, and 3 were in one early game.

2019-20 season, Brown shot threes at 0.308. This season at Cal he is shooting them at 0.500
Last season, over the first 7 games, he had 5 below average (.333) games, and shot threes at 0.500.
This season at Cal, over the first 7 games, he had 4 below average (.333) games, and shot threes at 0.600

He is about where I want him, let him shoot a three in the first half. If he makes it, let him shoot one in the second half. If he starts making both of them, then let him shoot more. When you have Bradley, Grant, Betley and Foreman, there is no need for Brown to start shooting threes.

As for Anticevich, I think he got off to a bad start in his first two games. Since then, he has been shooting threes at 42%. He will probably be fine.

Betley is also underperforming, but he has a nice smooth-looking stroke, and his threes that go in rarely hit anything but net. He shoots off balance or out of rhythm too often lately, maybe pressing too much. I think he as best at catch and shoot, when his feet are set.

2019-20 at Penn, he shot threes at .360, This season at Cal, he shot them at .326.
Last season, over his first 7 games, he had 3 games below average, shooting threes at .396.
This season at Cal, over his first 7 games, he has 5 games below average, shooting threes at .326.

Bradley has not been Bradley so far. In 2018-19 he shot threes at .472. In 2019-20, he shot threes at .384. In 2020-21, he has shot them at .278. In 2018-19 in his first 7 games, he did not have even one below average game, and shot threes at .647. In 2019-20, in his first 7 games, again he did not have even one below average game, and shot threes at .500. This season, in his first 7 games, he has had 4 below average games, and shot threes at .278. He is the team's leader, the go-to guy, and demonstrably the team's best three point shooter. The pressure is on him to deliver. It is not easy to break out of a slump, especially when the game depends so much on threes. He only gets a few shots a game. If he takes more of them to find a rhythm, and doesn't make a few, it hurts the team. If the others can start making some more threes, it will take some pressure of him, and vice versa.

I do agree with your conclusion, and share your optimism, but 7 games do not tell us very much. Right now, if we are going to be a three point shooting team, then we need to have several players making more of them

"Bradley and Anticevich need to get back to the 3 pt shooting excellence they demonstrated last year."

This season Grant has discovered he has the ball handling ability to drive to the hoop from the top of the key. He missed a couple of those vs USF but he has been very effective with the strategy. He has shown a good touch with it and he often gets fouled. I would like to see him try it 3 times a game...and more if it is working. When a man that big gets a head of steam up, the defender has to be fully committed to stopping him.....and not every player is.
