I was hoping Hyder would be. Maybe one day. Yah Betley and Foreman would be good complementary guys. Anticevich is a glue guy. Kelly might be the only scorer besides Kelly.

We need to stop recruiting guys who can't shoot. Too many on the roster now.

We are playing well except for defense, rebounding and scoring.

The thing is, we are doing it to ourselves. One example, Grant has a wide open 3. Doesn't take it. Then takes a dribble in and takes a tougher shot with a guy in his face. Just not smart basketball. The offense also doesn't create open shots for us
And we're also missing a bunch of wide open shots. Like the most recent Betley three.

Cal's field goal percentage is 46% for the season. That's not bad for a team who doesn't have bigs getting easy inside buckets to pump up the percentage. They lack consistency, though, especially when their best scoring threat isn't on the floor to take the heat off others.

I count at least 4 wide open 3s we've missed. Make two of those we would be in this game.

I doubt it is 46% in conference. That CSUN game was a complete aberration and is likely skewing the results.

We are at 36% right now in this game. That won't get it done.

They're shooting like they're playing on the road in an arena they never play at. Can't win that way.

Without Bradley, this is a roster FULL of ONLY marginal Pac 12 players... and it shows. Quietly going down to defeat.

If we are shooting that percentage and are still winless in conference then we need to shoot 55-60% to win. Tough to do.

Yah that second one looked like it was going down too.

Can't win when Betley doesn't make a three and we don't have Matt.

That tells you nearly everything. If you shoot that well and lose it is defense and turnovers.

I think I counted 3 shots that hit the backboard and entirely missed the hoop. Just not good.

This year has to be very frustrating for the staff, Foreman and Betley.

Bonton chirping away. He and Joel were going at it. Matt was talking to him after the game was over. Wazzu ain't good, we just have no fire power and missed a ton of wide open shots.

Game Highlights: Bradley cheerleading from the bench. Lars looking decent. Joel Brown laughing off Bonton's attempts to rile him. Celestine with a three! Anticevich back on the court.

Maybe we get a win vs the Mutts.

Didn't realize Betley made two 3s. Missed it. Foreman and Betley are not shooting well overall though.

Against ASU, we shot 40%, not 50%. 22 for 55, 27% from 3 (7-26). ASU shot 50%. Explains why we lost by 8.

Against UCLA, we shot 45%, but UCLA shot 60%. We were also outrebounded by 9 and turned the ball over 4 more times than they did. Since the game was over in the first 5-10 minutes of the game, hard to take any stats on our shooting seriously. At the end of the day, we only scored 56 points and lost by 20.

Against Oregon, we shot well. 45% overall, 40% from 3. But we turned the ball over 8 more times than them and were outrebounded again. Oregon shot just a bit better than us, but had 14 more shots. Lost by 13.

Against OSU, we shot 51% overall, 35% from 3. Not bad. But only 50% from the FT line.Turned the ball over 4 more times than them, outrebounded again. They took 11 more shots than us, we took 7 more free throws but because we shot so poorly, they outscored us from the free throw line 16-14. Lost by 9.

Tonight we shot 35%, and 24% from 3. We actually took care of the ball tonight with only 7 TOs, but were outrebounded by 17. Even with the TO discrepancy in our favor, WSU took 4 more shots than us and shot 44%, 39% from 3. Lost by 11.

Bradley shoots 45%. I don't think anyone is arguing he should shoot less. Betley and Foreman, who take the 2nd and 3rd most shots on the team by a fair margin, are shooting 38% and 35%. Arguably, they shouldn't shoot so much. Grant is shooting 47% and Kelly is shooting 56%. Arguably, they should get more shots.

Our bigs do pump up the shooting %s a bit. Lars and Thorpe are shooting 67% to go along with Kelly's 56%, though they take fewer shots.

So we appear to be a poor rebounding team. We turn the ball over a lot without creating a lot of turnovers. And at best, we are a mediocre shooting team. We have to figure out a way to get more shots than the other team to have a chance. Lots to fix.

Game ball to Grant if you consider his first game back. He probably deserves the game ball just for playing

But Lars had the best game, 10 points including a good FT%, 5 clean rebounds, good defense vs a big WSU line and only 1 TO and no fouls vs Grant's 1 rebound, 1 TO and 5 fouls. Also had one of the best Pac-12 dunks of the season over the top shot blocker in the conference

Lar's last two games has shown improvement

The problem is when Lars has the best game, it's not a good sign for the team

My eyeball test says Bentley and Foreman are good shooters but they excel at specific shots. They take way too many shots that aren't in their sweet spot. My take on things is each of them would be really nice on good squads where they could play a role or on a Monty team where they would get a lot of the type of shots they like, but neither is good enough to carry a team. I've reached the point of thinking we should bite the bullet and get Celestine and Bowser big minutes as an investment for the future (future being like next year) We are in year two of playing the grad transfers a lot and it's not really getting us anywhere.

Other than the on ball screens set at poor angles, I have no idea what Cal is trying to do on offense. They play offense like a bunch of guys who have never met each other. Awful coaching. At Georgia Fox had bad offenses, so this is no surprise. So frustrating to watch.

Even with Bradley we may be the worst team in the conference (who do you think is worse?). Agree that we are much worse without him.

I thought that Betley and Foreman did not get many good looks. Can blame it on the poor offensive scheme, or on the Cougar defense. I say it was a combination.

From observation, they appear to be mixing up 4 out and 3 out offenses, with a mix of in-n-out vs perimeter ball movement. From a coaching perspective, I think this is a good strategy with the matchups we've seen. They also appear to be maximizing transition opportunities.

However, what 'appears' and how it is executed has a lot to be desired. Too many turnovers, insufficient rebounding, mediocre shooting (I don't think shooting is their biggest problem at this stage - but its not great), poor passing and, as you noted weak screens. The passing is probably the biggest challenge at this stage of the season and is exacerbated by lineup changes due to injuries. A couple great examples are Lars and Betley. When Lars gets passes near his face and doesn't drop it, (because he wasn't ready) he looks pretty good. Similarly, when Betley gets a pass near his shins two feet to his right, when he is covered - makes him look bad. he's a spot up shooter. He needs the ball in his chest when he's open to maximize his quicker release.

I think the staff needs to focus on more of the execution than the design. But yeah - its on the staff and if this was happening at Georgia - probably means it is less likely to improve.

Braun's team had decent execution, but poor design IMHO. Cuonzo had mediocre execution and weak design (on offense) IMHO. Jones had poor design and poor execution (in everyone's opinion, it seems).

Monty had good design and close to great execution. I think that is because he adjusted his scheme and shot selection to suit his individual players assets (in particular Kamp, Boykin, Thurman and Sanders-Frison, but also Crabbe and Theo and Christopher on the perimeter). Dissecting it a little more compare Boykin vs Thurman and how Monty maximized their 8 foot game. Boykin was able to shoot with movement, but not contact - so Monty had him work a little curl or back screen above the post to great effect. Thurman, on the other hand shot better with contact, so the other post player would NOT back screen, but look for sneak pass and layup. That seems like an easy thing to duplicate, but few coaches can do that. I have heard other top coaches point out that Monty's methodology was actually a weakness come tourney time as his teams were very 'scoutable' - but wouldn't we love to have that problem!?!
