This team simply lacks scorers
I was hoping Hyder would be. Maybe one day. Yah Betley and Foreman would be good complementary guys. Anticevich is a glue guy. Kelly might be the only scorer besides Kelly.
We need to stop recruiting guys who can't shoot. Too many on the roster now.
Cal's field goal percentage is 46% for the season. That's not bad for a team who doesn't have bigs getting easy inside buckets to pump up the percentage. They lack consistency, though, especially when their best scoring threat isn't on the floor to take the heat off others.
I doubt it is 46% in conference. That CSUN game was a complete aberration and is likely skewing the results.
We are at 36% right now in this game. That won't get it done.
In their 4 Pac games they shot 50%, 45%, 45% and 51%. They're just not shooting well tonight and they really miss Bradley.
Against ASU, we shot 40%, not 50%. 22 for 55, 27% from 3 (7-26). ASU shot 50%. Explains why we lost by 8.
Against UCLA, we shot 45%, but UCLA shot 60%. We were also outrebounded by 9 and turned the ball over 4 more times than they did. Since the game was over in the first 5-10 minutes of the game, hard to take any stats on our shooting seriously. At the end of the day, we only scored 56 points and lost by 20.
Against Oregon, we shot well. 45% overall, 40% from 3. But we turned the ball over 8 more times than them and were outrebounded again. Oregon shot just a bit better than us, but had 14 more shots. Lost by 13.
Against OSU, we shot 51% overall, 35% from 3. Not bad. But only 50% from the FT line.Turned the ball over 4 more times than them, outrebounded again. They took 11 more shots than us, we took 7 more free throws but because we shot so poorly, they outscored us from the free throw line 16-14. Lost by 9.
Tonight we shot 35%, and 24% from 3. We actually took care of the ball tonight with only 7 TOs, but were outrebounded by 17. Even with the TO discrepancy in our favor, WSU took 4 more shots than us and shot 44%, 39% from 3. Lost by 11.
Bradley shoots 45%. I don't think anyone is arguing he should shoot less. Betley and Foreman, who take the 2nd and 3rd most shots on the team by a fair margin, are shooting 38% and 35%. Arguably, they shouldn't shoot so much. Grant is shooting 47% and Kelly is shooting 56%. Arguably, they should get more shots.
Our bigs do pump up the shooting %s a bit. Lars and Thorpe are shooting 67% to go along with Kelly's 56%, though they take fewer shots.
So we appear to be a poor rebounding team. We turn the ball over a lot without creating a lot of turnovers. And at best, we are a mediocre shooting team. We have to figure out a way to get more shots than the other team to have a chance. Lots to fix.
