WU17 National Team (usab.com)

Of course, Sue Phillips (Mitty) is the HC!

She has offers from Cal, UCLA, and Stanford. What is the likelihood of her choosing Cal?

Sad to say it, but I don't see how we can make much of a recruiting pitch, especially versus other top programs, until we can show progress vs. our 4-34 conference record over the past three years. That is why this coming season is so important. Time to get it done.

annarborbear is correct. It is time for Charmin to demonstrate progress in the program or vacate after the season.

They are replaying the Girls High School McDonalds All American Game on ESPN featuring the usual top rated players like Betts and 2 others going to Stanford, Rice etc to UCLA,others to Oregon, besides to the other conference leaders, etc... When was the last time Cal had a recruit in that game? Was it Smith? And as usual looking at ESPN recruiting for 2023 again shows early recruits committing to Stanford and the other powerhouses. At least we have Curry and now Bonner. Is our best chance right now for the staff to discover overlooked unranked diamonds in the rough? If there is a revamping of the Pac12 where Cal is competing with lesser rated schools I wonder if they would get more recruits? And if so-would they be more players but out of the top 100 anyway? On another note, I think it will be slightly easier to watch our WBB games over our MBB games-still will watch and root on both our teams.

I'm afraid MBB will depend on two incoming transfer guards for offense. If they work out the team might do about as well (i.e. hard to watch) as last year, if not the season could be an epic disaster.

WBB will have more depth and experience than at any time during Charmin's tenure. I'm looking forward to watching them.

Canada v USA boxscore - FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 - 16 July - FIBA.basketball

Cal should recruit these high school age girls from Spain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
Australia - FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 - FIBA.basketball

France - FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 - FIBA.basketball

Or, until we have a new head coach.

The good news is there will be some pieces to work with. Winning will be so important that I presume the grad transfers will all see a lot of minutes to get their experience on the floor. But we will also need one person to emerge as an All-PAC-12 player, and the individual with the talent to do so is Michele. Glad that she decided to stick around. But again, we now need to see some results.

I'm optimistic we can manage a very good class from the 2024 graduating pool:

ESPNW's Rankings
14. Jordan Lee 5'11", G Stockton, CA
18. Kennedy Smith 6'1", W/F Etiwanda, CA
19. Katie Fiso 5'10", PG Seattle, WA
22. Tajianna Avant-Roberts 5'10", G La Jolla, CA
23. Mackenly Randolph 6'1", F Chatsworth, CA
24. Destiny Agubata 5'11", W Etiwanda, CA
25. Harper Peterson 6'3", F Rocklin, CA
28. Morgan Cheli 6'2", G/F San Jos, CA
32. Kaniya Boyd 5'9", G Las Vegas, NV
36. Devin Coppinger, 5'11", G Everson, WA
47. Ava Heiden 6'4" P, Sherwood, OR
50. Athena Tomlinson 5'5" PG, Fresno, CA
56. Shay Ijiwoye 5'6" PG, Phoenix, AZ
59. Me'Arah O'Neal 6'3" F, Santa Monica, CA

We're in good position by virtue of the amount of talent on the West Coast for this class, including several who could later crack this list or get featured when it expands to 100.

Of this pool, I think our best shots might be Harper Peterson, Tajianna Avant-Roberts, and Shay Ijiwoye. I'm really hoping the local star Peterson stays home. She sounds similar but better than Courtney Range was. Despite being a 4.0 student, I don't believe Stanford has offered, perhaps because of their ridiculous track record of managing to sign elite bigs year after year and needing to prioritize guards.

Side note: Shaq's daughter Me'Arah O'Neal is supposedly having a monster summer and skyrocketed to the #2 ranking nationally by ASGR. Heiden's stock also is seems to be rising fast.

I'd love to see Fiso come down to Berkeley. Seems we got a head start on her.

Respectfully, one of the best predictors of near future is recent past. Do you think a coach who was 4-34 (and lost to "powerhouses" like Bakersfield and SJSU), all of sudden becomes the next Tara V. or Gino A.? I don't.

Yes, that is certainly true. Your rants from 2 years ago are back despite countless and exhausting explanations about a depleted team due to injuries, young freshmen thrown into starting positions, etc. etc. Keep re-winding that tape.

Do you not want Coach Smith to succeed?

Annarborbear was not predicting that Smith would immediately be either of those coaches. Just asking for results with this experienced team like most of us want.

Let's see the non-conference schedule when it's available and then make predictions on how THIS season will play out. Support the team by going to some games. Be optimistic for now. We're undefeated.

Forget a change at HC, we need to add one of these on staff!

(fwiw, Brenda Frese pretty much tweeted explicitly that Angel Reese transferred to LSU from Maryland for increased NIL opportunities. And indeed, Angel Reese had a video feature in The NY Times the other day doing a makeup tutorial).
