I watched this game yesterday on NFHS before the Cal-Montana game. The top senior post player in NorCal, 6-4 Amanda Muse, was held to one basket (2 points). The Monarchs full court pressed the 1st half and Heritage could seldom get the ball into a half-court offense to enter the ball into Muse. In the second half, Archbishop Mitty played tight man-to-man defense and yielded six free throws. I have not found a box score yet so I do not know the distribution of points. The Monarchs started JR PG Morgan Cheli (6-2), SR SG Haley Hernandez (6-0), SR SF Elle Hanson (6-0), FR PF McKenna Woliczko (6-1) & SR C Maya Hernandez (6-0). The two new transfers, 6-1 JR C Elana Weisman (Burlingame HS) and 6-0 JR SF Belle Bramer (Los Gatos HS) DNP. A dozen players were in uniform but only ten were allowed to play for Sue Phillips & Co.

AM graduated four guards last season and the only three-point bomber yesterday was Morgan Cheli with 3.

Tonight (7:30) is the early season test with Mitty facing St Marys of Stockton in game 2 of the Cardinal Newman tourney. I signed up to watch it with some service out of San Francisco. The two best junior guards in Northern California are facing each other tonight in Morgan Cheli (Mitty) & Jordan Lee (SMS). I wonder if Lee can break Mitty's full-court press?

Archbishop Mitty defeated St Marys, 57-42, last night at Cardinal Newman HS. It was a defensive-oriented battle with the Monarchs leading after every quarter. Morgan Cheli picked up her second personal foul midway through the opening quarter and had to sit out the equivalent of a quarter. The AM star fouled out with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the game. The refs called the game a bit on the tight side. Cheli was called for three offensive charging fouls, an over the back foul when attempting an offensive rebound & one defensive foul while trying to steal the ball early in the game. She had to play tentatively and didn't score often. Both teams missed some easy shots and lots of free throws.

St. Mary's vs Archbishop Mitty | Girls Basketball | 12/2 (maxpreps.com)

The Rams made their run in the 3rd quarter when they hit three consecutive three point shots and an offensive rebound basket to cut the Monarch lead down to eight points. Mitty quickly regrouped, however, and scored ten straight to regain their 18 point lead.

Freshman PF, McKenna Woliczko, had a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Senior Elle Hanson hit a couple of three pointers when Cheli was on the bench to help maintain the team's lead. She scored 14 points. Maya Hernandez scored clutch baskets inside or on turnaround jumpers in the key when Archbishop Mitty needed.

SMS star Jordan Lee had an off night offensively and scored most of her points from the foul line. She had at least three of her shots blocked when attempting to finish inside. Woliczko blocked one. Nyah Lowery (#15) was the most impressive Ram last night.

Today Mitty (3-0) faces the home team, Cardinal Newman (4-0), at 3:30 pm. The players are really not in mid-season shape yet for playing three games in three days.

Archbishop Mitty 58, Cardinal Newman 31

Both teams were undefeated. This is the 3rd game in three days and the players were exhausted. The Monarchs did not use their trademark full-court press to start the game and after 5 minutes the score was AM 4, CN 2. HC Sue Phillips called a timeout and implemented the press out of necessity. The halftime score spread out to Archbishop Mitty 32, Cardinal Newman 11. In the fourth quarter, the Monarchs pushed their lead to greater than 30 points and retired their starters for the final several minutes of the game. Morgan Cheli had 19 points (per the announcers) during the 3rd quarter. Today the best player for CN was a quick senior PG (#3), Julia Brunetti, who drove to the basket for layups on four occasions. She likely scored in double figures.

The Monarchs are now 4-0. They currently have an eight-player rotation. When the two quality transfers are cleared to play by the CIF, it will grow to ten. Go Monarchs!

Piedmont won by four -- and they are very good -- but Mitty was without the best player in between L.A. and the Canadian border, Morgan Cheli. She missed the game with a sprained ankle but reportedly will be back for the Nike TOC.

GO PIEDMONT!!!

Oddly, the two programs ( boys vs girls basketball ) at Piedmont High are polar opposites of each other.

The boys team is made up entirely of Piedmont High students who all live within a mile of the school. Many of the players have been playing basketball together in piedmont since they were in 5th grade.

The girls team is almost entirely recruited transfer students who attend the alternative high school that sits on the PHS campus, Millennium. These girls are some of the East Bay's top players. I think there are a few Piedmont area girls who sit at the end of the bench and rarely play.

So it should really be; Go Millenium Falcons ( yes, that's their mascot )

Mitty defeated Desert Vista, 63-49, in the initial round of the Nike TOC in AZ. I tuned in one hour late due to MST. I missed the1st half but watched the second. Desert Vista is the #2 ranked team in Arizona and they cut the Monarch's lead down to six before the CA team made some clutch shots to extend the lead. AM did not use their full-court press in the second half and Morgan Cheli (#33) did not play. I am surprised that Mitty prevailed.

There are eight divisions of 16 teams. I saw probably 20+ California high school results. Folsom advanced easily.
I do not believe that I saw Piedmont's result. I don't even have the late-night winner for Mitty's opponent tomorrow morning. It's either Lu Hi (New York) or Lake Highland Prep (Florida). The final score was 79-67. I don't know which team was in the white or the dark jerseys. There are no play-by-play announcers and the data stream is too far away. Four courts are playing simultaneously with referee's whistles going off loudly between every 5-10 minutes. After I took two Tylenol for my headache, I muted the sound.

***Archbishop Mitty will face Lu Hi (New York) this morning at 9:30 am PST. Unless Monarch's star Morgan Cheli can play, I see no way that they can prevail.***

Archbishop Mitty 23, Bishop McNamara (MD) 23. halftime

The refs allowed this game to get totally out-of-control because they wouldn't call fouls. The more the players were allowed to "play", the more physical the game became. Mitty had one player injured and multiple players thrown to the ground. Two technical fouls were called on Bishop McNamara in the fourth quarter because of flagrant fouls. The Monarchs outlasted their opponents, 51-40. Mitty only made one three-point shot in the game. It was McKenna Woliczko & Maya Hernandez that scored most of the points inside. Elle Hanson made a few baskets and April Chan hit a few free throws. Haley Hernandez was hurt by the AM bench.

In a touch of irony, Bishop McNamara full-court pressed Archbishop Mitty the entire game. I'm going to take a couple of Tylenol. This game was an absolute street fight.

Archbishop Mitty will battle Sacred Heart (KY) tomorrow at 2 pm for fifth place in their bracket.

I watched Lu Hi (NY) defeat Sidwell (DC) last night. These teams look like college teams with their athleticism and height. No wonder Mitty got blown out by 22 to Lu Hi. I predict that they win easily tonight for the championship over La Jolla Country Day. LJCD did not show me that they were on the same level as those top two. They play tonight at 8pm PST and Mitty plays for 5th place at 2 pm.
Schroeder71
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Archbishop Mitty (CA) comfortably handled Sacred Heart (Kentucky), 62-46, to capture 5th place in the 16 team Vincent Division. The Monarchs won 3 out of 4 games in 4 days without their star player, Morgan Cheli. They also still do not have their two transfers eligible until January. I was able to watch these nine girls play 2 1/2 of the games. The game that I missed was the blowout loss to Lu Hi (New York), 70-48. I predict Long Island Lutheran will defeat La Jolla Country Day tonight at 8 pm PST for the crown of the Vincent Division.

I doubted that the short-handed Monarchs would be able to win a single game at the Nike TOC but they played well as a team under HC Sue Phillips direction. Each team that they defeated had one or two big stars, yet Mitty's team more than compensated. In the games that I witnessed the frosh and senior posts learned how to play off each other's game. They looked to pass to one another and often rebounded the other's missed shots. Frosh McKenna Woliszko (6-1) & senior Maya Hernandez (6-0) scored the majority of AM's points and held their own inside. I would say that they controlled the games for the most part. Obviously, they can not do that against tall front lines like Long Island Lutheran (6-5 C & 6-2 PF). The amazing part is that the Monarchs did not use their full court press or half court trap much due to the exhaustion of playing four games in four days against top level competition.

I would imagine that these four games will enable this team to be difficult to beat in Northern California for the rest of the season if they can stay healthy. Go Mitty! GO BEARS!

I was correct: Lu Hi (NY) 63, La Jolla Country Day 50 (CA) in championship (Vincent division). Long Island Lutheran was the only team to defeat and dominate Archbishop Mitty and they were the best team there.
Lu Hi entered the Nike TOC ranked #19 nationally and KO'd two top ten teams: Sidwell (DC) & LJCD. Obviously, the New York team should be ranked much higher.

Archbishop Mitty (CA) handled #17 ranked Sacred Heart of Kentucky by 16 points for 5th place.

In other Nike TOC Divisions, both Carondelet (John Div) & Folsom (Joe Smith Div) lost in their respective championship games. Bishop O'Dowd surprised with a couple victories, making it to their quarterfinals. The also lost to Corona Centennial to finish 4th. Cardinal Newman won one game and got beat by Corona Centennial (60-55) in their 2nd. Oakland Tech captured their opener but lost their 2nd to Cannon (NC) by 1 point. Cannon advanced to the semi-finals. Oakland Tech placed 5th like Mitty. Salesian (Richmond) lost their opener to go to the loser's bracket but they swept three consecutive games to win it (9th place).

In summary, Archbishop Mitty, Folsom, Carondelet, Oakland Tech, Salesian & Cardinal Newman faired well over the four-day tournament. Four games in four days is tough especially if your team lacks depth. The Monarchs pressed (their trademark) very seldom during the 2 1/2 games that I saw.

I just watched the 4th quarter of Pinewood-Salesian on NFHS. Pinewood played #44, Ava Uhrich, 5-11 senior transfer F, and the Panthers upset the Pride, 67-62. Pinewood is now 3-4 and Salesian slips to 12-2. Uhrich scored four baskets in the final quarter plus a couple of guards hit three pointers to hold off the home team. Neither team looked overwhelmingly good (IMO).

Tonight, Archbishop Mitty travels to San Francisco to face Saint Ignatius in their WCAL opener at 5pm. I hope that the Monarchs are back to full strength with a healthy Morgan Cheli and their two transfers eligible. This is Mitty's first game in sixteen days since the Nike TOC Tournament in Phoenix.

I watched the Archbishop Mitty-Sacred Heart Cathedral game last night. The final score was 65-45 in favor of the Monarchs. The Monarchs did not play well. They had not played in 16 days, and it showed. Morgan Cheli and Belle Bramer were in street clothes but 6-1 junior transfer PF Elana Weisman (#44) made her WCAL debut.

Mitty led at intermission, 35-14. SHC actually outscored AM by one [31-30] in the second half. The Irish had three very quick, diminutive guards (#20, #11 & #0) that gave the Monarchs fits. I would speculate that they forced at least 20 Mitty turnovers on the night. They also scored on drives to the basket and on long three pointers. The Monarch' offense primarily came from frosh C McKenna Wolizko and senior wing Elle Hanson.

If Archbishop Mitty plays like they did last night they could be upset by Oakland Tech (1/14) and/or by Bishop O'Dowd on the Martin Luther King holiday (1/16).

Oakland Tech is very good but doesn't shoot well from the perimeter. Mitty should be able to deal with them.

O'Dowd is an interesting case. The Dragons don't even have a JV team, as they have lots of good freshmen on varsity -- but freshmen are going to have an issue dealing with Mitty, which plays a different kind of game than most high school teams. Mitty is very, very organized, has lots of height, and plenty of skill. You have to play really well, and stay composed for 32 minutes, to beat them.

The game was scheduled to be broadcast on NFHS yesterday but did not. I've seen some highlite clips and the game was approximately a Monarch 5-point lead at halftime over the Dragons. On Mitty's website they have 4 or 5 short videos of less than a minute featuring various players. The MVP based on the stats she generated was senior post, Maya Hernandez. She filled the stat sheet with 7 assists, 12 rebounds, 6 points, 3 blocks & 4 steals.
This 6-0 all-around player reminds me of Maddie Holland (5-11) who started for four seasons for the St Mary's Gaels. Frosh C McKenna Wolizcko (6-1) was the beneficiary of several assists. She scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, made 2 assists, stole the ball twice and blocked one shot. The new 6-1 junior PF, Elana Weisman, is finding her role on the team. She scored 12 points and had 3 rebounds. Her offense included two corner three- point baskets. Senior 6-0 wing, Elle Hanson also hit a couple threes for the Monarchs. If HC Sue Phillips could ever get junior 6-2 PG Morgan Cheli and the other transfer, junior 6-0 SF Belle Bramer, healthy and playing this team would really be tough to beat!

Cal's dozen player roster has 6 seniors, 3 juniors, 2 sophomores and a freshman

I think that Cal should consider offering the fab 6-1 frosh (#20) Wolizcko and the transfer 6-1 junior #44 Weisman.
