Jayda announced her decision on Instagram about an hour ago. Too much RED to post it here.

Pics with the caption "had to find a new approach to an old dream".

Reminiscent of Kianna Smith's decision to leave Cal.

"I took my visit and I enjoyed everything about it. The coaching staff, the girls, just the program's history and the program's success," Curry told Bally Sports. "I'm just excited to be on that big stage ... just trying to be that person who can come in there and help and impact them and take them a little farther, get to the Final Four again and hopefully win a national championship."

Louisville took Kianna Smith (McDonald's AA) and now Jayda Curry.

I just listened to Mark Madsen speak of the future of Cal men's basketball and he talked about "the big stage."
I bet that he gets the team to a winning record within three years, possibly two. GO BEARS!

Just saw it. I had her going to one of the LA schools for sure. Not a huge fan of Jeff Waltz, but hopefully she is able to find what she is looking for at Louisville.

Women's college basketball transfer rankings 2023-24: Top 20 players in the portal (espn.com)

Here's an ESPN list of the top 20 players currently in the portal. Curry was listed as #4.

Certainly a big step up, basketball wise. Hope it works out for her.

Out of the top twenty transfers list, 12 are guards, 6 are forwards & 2 are centers. I don't know how Charmin Smith will fare here. I think that players that know the Cal program will be the best bet unless they come for grad school or the academics. The three transfers from last season were two Pac 12 players & a local post from USF.
The two players from our conference ended up starting every game that they were healthy. One starter has transferred out (Jayda Curry) and two have graduated. The Bears only have two starters returning so this could be catastrophic if she doesn't land talent that contribute right away.

A new point of comparison will be the type of players that Madsen is able to bring in from the men's portal vs those we get from the women's portal. It has been hard to get the better portal players to come into a losing program unless you are starting over with a new coach. We'll see if that holds true here. Our best bet may be with good but not great grad transfers who will want to put Cal on their academic resumes.

I saw a few opinions on this piece and people felt Jayda should've been listed at #1.

Good luck to Jayda. It worked out well for Smith.

Cal women's hoops depth thin after Jayda Curry transfers to Louisville (sfchronicle.com)

This article states that Evelien Lutje Schipholt is in the transfer portal. I thought that I understood that she was going to return to the Netherlands after graduating from Cal. Evidently, she has her Covid 5th year of eligibility and is seeking a grad transfer elsewhere. Another starter that wanted out. The article also states that "Cal has lost six (scholarship) players over the past two seasons to transfers or those leaving the team for other reasons." Ouch.

Smith transferred after Goettlib left, Plummer wanted to play with his old coach (and also was not very good here), and Curry mentioned rather succinctly that she wanted to play games in March, which is a pretty low bar.

Actually, Smith announced her departure in April 2019, and then Lindsay took the Cavs job in June 2019. Lindsay could see that with weak recruiting and Smith's departure, things were heading South.

Perhaps Evelien Lutje Schipholt sees a 5th year at another school as worthwhile for academic reasons. If she's entering a masters program it may be due to the fact Cal doesn't offer something she's actually interested in. Also, with regard to number of transfers....multiple quality players transferring out seems to be a reality with many successful teams, not just struggling teams like Cal. Maryland, a very successful program has had multiple top players transfer. They're not the only one. It seems to be pretty common up and down D1.

Quote:

Brenda Frese says she wasn't surprised by the massive roster shake-up that happened this offseason. In one week, Maryland lost its top two scorers and a top reserve to the transfer portal. The Terrapins certainly weren't the only women's basketball program with significant losses to the portal, but the departures of standouts Angel Reese and Ashley Owusu were especially notable.
Here's a gift link to the above Washington Post story: Brenda Frese downplays high-profile transfers, restocks Maryland's roster

Of course the key to continued success in this era of transfers is "re-stocking." We shall see.

Jadyn Bush - graduated
Cailyn Crocker - transfer
Jayda Curry - transfer
Dalayah Daniels - transfer
Jazlen Green - retired
Karisma Ortiz ??
Fatou Samb - transfer
Evelien Lutje Schipholt ??

Neither Karisma nor Evelien are listed on Raoul's blog as being in the transfer portal. So, not sure where the reporter got that information. I thought Evelien was either going to pursue a professional career likely in Europe or return for her Covid year.

I forgot about Karisma Ortiz. She was Charmin's sixth man off of the bench and averaged over 20 minutes per game PT. Where is she going? She had another year of eligibility unless she had to apply to the NCAA to receive it. Ortiz was the key to Smith's four guard/wing lineup usually attempting to defend a "big" frontline opposing player. Also, Sela Heide departed (retired). Three of the bigs from that standout recruit class are gone. Only Michelle Onyiah remains.

If either Ortiz or Schipholt planned to stay, they would be up on the new Calbears.com roster. They are not there.

Not necessarily. They could still be deliberating their next move. Those shown on the roster are known returnees.

Does Smith have much NIL money to work with? Madsen apparently already is doing a good job getting alums to open their pockets. I like Madsen's chances of landing higher rated Portal players.

This WBB staff is something like 10-55 (15% winning, 85% losing) in the PAC-12 since they took over. Do you really expect any alum to pour in the NIL money for this …?

At least we got Madsen who had a winning season and took his team to the finals of the NIT. VS Smith. I doubt her portal transfer recruits will match the quality of those for our MBB.

Neither is going to match the Men's Swimming recruits.
You want to have a bar, might as well be a high one.

Dominoes, Jayda, dominoes!

As per Raoul
Hailey Van Lith (5-7 JR point guard, Wenatchee, WA) has entered her name into the portal, out of Louisville WBB; 2022-23 stats: 19.7 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.2 APG, 55 steals; first-team All-ACC; USBWA and AP honorable mention All-America.

Come back, West! We've got a room for you, Hailey!
(Kidding. Her NIL requirement would be way beyond our means. Nice try, though. lol)

So far, major NIL in women's basketball is coming from selected companies rather than alumni. Van Lith is signed with a talent agency that has her under three current endorsement contracts, and her estimated earnings potential is $1 million per year if located in the right markets, most likely LA. The women's NIL is also concentrated in a particular demographic with large Instagram followings.

I get NIL and the Transfer Portal, but can't say I like 100% free agency all the time

one of the big things I like college sports over the pros are the players, but if they are only here 1 or 2 years, and sometimes even go to other conference teams and will compete against you, it takes away for that

I have thought for some time that there will eventually have to be two college divisions - one with no limits and one with some limits. Without a salary cap and a draft like professional sports to create a level playing field, eventually something has to give.

She didn't even do the usual obligatory thank you/ good-bye post to Cal basketball players and fans. But she probably would sell you an autographed Louisville tee shirt.
