Cal Announces First Set Of Nonconference Home Dates - California Golden Bears Athletics (calbears.com)

I have not researched these teams yet but the Bears will have to play well to open up 2-2 at home. I'm guessing that SJS will face Cal and Texas A&M will face the unknown opponent on the initial day of their tournament. If the Bears & the Aggies advance to the championship game, it will be tough to defeat a SEC team especially that early in the season. Remember Cal will have more than 50% of its team being new players. Then on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th, Gonzaga comes calling...Bombs away! Gonzaga is usually ranked and is competitive with Stanford every season. I'm sure that Makayla Williams is thrilled to have to face her former team right away. Cal has generally had a winnable OOC schedule which has enabled the team to enter conference play with an impressive record like 9-2 or so.

These four games seem like a high probability of a split. I cannot even envision what Cal will look like as a functioning team this season and how they will be able to score sixty points per game, for example.

I hope that I'm totally off base with my statements above and that Charmin Smith & Co have surprises waiting for TAMU & Gonzaga.

I just visited the Aggies website and women's bball team was lousy last season. Does anyone know how their 2023 recruit class is rated? Their roster is not listed yet.

Three super transfers are on-board, however. Guard Endiya Rogers (Oregon), center Lauren Ware (Arizona) & guard Aicha Coulibaly (Auburn). Cal fans know the two Pac 12 players but here is the press clipping on Coulibaly:
All-SEC Veteran Aicha Coulibaly Joins Aggie Women's Basketball - Texas A&M Athletics - 12thMan.com

The games with Texas A&M, SJSU and the unknown opponent are NOT a tournament. This is Raising The B.A.R Invitational. Cal will play two of the three. Likewise, the other 3 opponents. FYI, in November 2019, Cal beat a ranked SEC team (Arkansas) at Haas.

Too early to speculate on outcomes. This team is working hard during summer workouts to build chemistry, determine roles, etc. Even in July, your negativity resurfaces.

I knew it was the black coach special with four teams. I didn't have the fancy name down. Sorry. I was including Cal State Bakersfield and San Jose State as the two wins and Gonzaga & TAMU as the losses. My point was that to finish 9-2 like last pre-season (OOC) they would have to go undefeated the rest of the way. Charmin knows that she has to produce a winning team this year or else. I am surprised that the early schedule is this daunting w/ so many new players attempting to gel together. No trip to Spain to help bond the players like last year.

2019 was still under Lindsay, who has gone on at USC to show that she really is an excellent coach and recruiter, with a career 66% winning record and nine NCAA appearances at three different schools. Now it is Charmin's turn to show that she can do the same.

2019-20 was Charmin's first year as HC

Nope.

The 2019-20 season was Charmin's first as Head Coach (named HC on June 21,2019
after Lindsay bailed on the Bears for the Cleveland Cavaliers)

November 24, 2019, Cal upset #20 Arkansas, 84-80.

I stand corrected. So what will be a minimal acceptable performance this year in Year Five? Will anything less than an NCAA appearance be acceptable? Will anything less than that get our fan attendance back up to previous levels?

It's called The Basketball, Activism, Representation special. Do better, man.

Thanks CalFanatic. And please S71, it's fine to not remember the (fancy)acronym/name of the invitational, but the "Black Coach Special"…

I hear both of you wanting me to be politically aligned with Charmin Smith. Her involvement with BLM, etc. is a major turnoff for me. This leftist political activism is a good deal that is wrong with the United States today. Our country is NOT united, maybe 50/50. Critical race theory taught to our children and black reparations, etc. This is pure communist Marxism with the federal government redistributing income, not democratic capitalism.
Take this to Off-Topic and maybe take yourself to another site altogether (UCSB?). Spreading mis-information (CRT is NOT taught to children) will not be tolerated here.

I, too, marched to protest racial injustice and inequality, so sue me.

CERTAIN posters here bring up race and cry victim when questioned about it.

And it is a tired a$$ playbook. Probably a book that would be banned by certain overreaching Governor's who won't shut up about freedom... but do the complete opposite.

All I am going to say.

This is why I block Schroeder71, despite his basketball smarts (although it's obviously hard to avoid his posts). The snarky communism-Marxism-BLM comments are simply gratuitous. For god's sake, man, if you're devoted to a sport that attracts a lot of girls and women of color, you are going to sometimes find yourself in the midst of a political movement that supports these young women. I'm here to support Cal WBB and, as a woman and a mother, to some extent their concerns are my concerns. Please do try to get over it, Schroeder71; this board is supposed to be about them.

This is crap. You criticize my conservative, Christian Republican beliefs yet when I withdraw, you clowns come and stab me in the back while I have no means to defend myself.

If you guys want the truth then engage me in a personal message debate on this subject. I can obliberate your woke, leftist Democrat agenda any day of the week. Bring it on, "cheap shot" artists. No more political debate here, please.

FYI Sarah Silverman explains woke:

"I think we're just communicating wrong, because, like, what I know 'woke' to mean is, like, learning new things about people or the world, and then acting accordingly. Like, basic kindness. Maybe a gesture of care to people who are more vulnerable than you. You know what, actually you wouldn't like it it's Jesus stuff."

"It feels cooler to say, 'I'm not woke' than the truth, which is, 'I'm terrified of what I don't understand and I only know how to process that as anger because I can't look inward.'"

I like Jesus stuff and when I don't understand something I pray and ask for help. Sarah Silverman is a comedian and a Democrat. I don't know enough about her to label her leftist activist but I certainly won't be turning to her for advice.

So well said. "Supports them..." I am often embarrassed as white male, and parts of this thread certainly does that. And by all means, let's tell these young women what to believe in and what should concern them, and please let's emphasize that it's up to us to tell them what to do with their bodies.

Don't care what you can obliterate. My gay daughter is at risk because of those who think they have the answers for her happiness. I am a 66 year old Jewish male, and now Proud conservatives question my right to exist like at no other time in my life.
Right, no politics on this board would be nice... however, I guess good to know who hates me here too. But good news... for the first time in my life, I am considering getting a gun, because, psst, don't tell anyone, but some lefties aren't going to sit by and let hate fire all the shots.

I agree that we shouldn't discuss politics on the Bear Insider, or indulge in provocative/heedless speech, such as calling the BAR Invitational the black coach special. Tricky, I know, but surely alumni of a great university can manage to write accurate and courteous posts: for example, saying "the Thanksgiving-weekend tournament" if you can't remember the term "BAR Invitational."

Hey, Take it easy! I would appreciate your prayers for the Cal WBB program......
Some of our esteemed players may support BLM. Charmin supports racial diversity period.
I do too! I don't like using the word leftist. I support a constant flow of striving for equality
on and off the basketball court. Isn't that what Jesus would do........

Who knew you are a Conservative, Christian, Republican.....you need not tell us.

I am a Lifelong Christian, Progressive, Democrat, but who cares!!!

I am just bummed because I will be in Mass. and Vermont with family for Thanksgiving, which is wonderful.

However, I will miss watching Gonzaga play at Cal, a missed opportunity.!!

Do not let any of us get you down.....We have a common thread, Women's Collegiate Basketball.
