the BIG GIVE update from the con artist:

guess wut??

this **** didn't go well, only $2,178,600 wuz pledged of which a significant portion of this non binding pledge dollars will NEVER be actually collected, yeah cal athletic department fundraisers make up/exaggerate numbers to justify their bureaucratic existence (unlike shocky who collects 100% of all rescue doggy dog facilities bequests here in maricopa county within 48 hours of a pledge to him, not giving the monster a personal check made out directly to the beneficiary of ur choice is NOT an option)

chancellor lyons, you were hoping that "game on" that berkeley grads wuz gonna go all in to endow the olympics sports & now u got real time feedback that there is almost ZERO support for that initiative...it's clear that NOW is the time to rightsize the athletic department by:

1) terminating knowlton, jenny & markeisha
2) promoting andrew mcgraw to athletic director, FREE tixs for all berkeley students to football & basketball games!!
3) rightsizing the athletic department to 15 sport teams that compete for championships
4) hire a men's & women's basketball general manager that will fundraise nil & a dedicated basketball practice facility dollars with jaylen brown as the face of cal basketball
5) "sell" evans diamond & edwards field to the central campus for the greater good of the university in exchange for the elimination of the hundreds of millions of dollars of recent athletic department debt that will never have the future revenue streams for repayment

rich, we're waiting on you to do the right thing, there's a financial tsunami heading towards berkeley & ur savvy leadership is critical and huge props to you for the uc board of regents football general manager approval agenda item next week at 2:00 pm on march 19th re: ron rivera

quite often "passing decisions" are dictated by the efficiency of the opponents' defense. If it was just about "decisions" it might be possible to never commit a turnover.

So this is what I use for my players (and it applies to a lot more than passing, and a lot more than basketball):

1) Vision
2) Decision
3) Execution

1) See what's going on. What is the defense doing? Who's on the floor with me? Where is the best place to have the ball go next?

This is difficult. Much harder than deciding whether to shoot or not, much more difficult than a defensive scheme.

And it's impossible to practice. You have to be playing against live competition doing things you don't expect.

2) Once you see the situation, the next step is determining the best option. Not always simple. Marta down low or Ioanna with a slightly contested three?

3) Then you have to get the ball there, quickly and accurately. This means having the ability to make a wide variety of passes from a wide variety of angles.

And of course, all this has to happen in a fraction of a second.

The difference between the great athlete who makes it and the one who doesn't is the ability to process all this information more quickly than the opposition. (This processing ability is what makes Draymond Green a great player.)

And I don't know if this can be taught.

clay, appreciate the nuances & the split second decision making involving passes

shocky is referring to:

1) the interior lob passes to michelle when she's triple teamed in the interior & thrown out of bounds
2) the one handed flip passes that are often wildly inaccurate & stolen for breakaway opponent buckets
3) the cross court heave passes that don't add any value to the offense & that are often intercepted along the way
4) careless passes thrown almost directly to a kinda surprised defender

and then when the turnover passer eventually leaves the game there are no conversations with the staff just silent fist bumps & no eye contact

the good news is that the starting 5 should be well rested & ready to play their best brand of cal basketball in the city of angels!!

shocky, you might want to add the long transition passes that are made when there is almost no existing angle to the recipient. Those almost always result in a turnover, and we still see them from game to game. This type of turnover can be eliminated with coach messaging and player focus.

good post Clay

yes, there are passing execution problems, and high risk / high reward passing issues but you need to run your offense, and a lot of the passes are from sets or actions which are practiced every day, and coaches make decisions on who can make that pass

BUT It's not the physical pass mechanics that are the difficult part. It's the vision, decision making and speed that you refer to that is critical and difficult.

That's why some players are good passers ("good vision")

When a player says the 'game slowed down' it means they could see the floor, the angles, players cutting vs defenders, and therefore make a quicker and better decision.

It's the same meaning as when an announcer say a trap or pressure defense was successful to "speed up" a player(s) ... and why I like aggressive defenses vs fundamentally sound defenses that sit back.

Now I absolutely hate when the ball stops and stares down Michelle in the post (even worse if she is being doubled). Very high risk pass because everyone sees it coming.

and agree, it's tough to teach someone how to be Jason Kidd

gabby abigor: read this letter to her younger self

gabby is quick twitch +1 athletic with length, she is already a disruptive high energy force on DEFENSE which is the key element of winning basketball games particularly on the road in hostile venues further afar

abigor, unlike onyiah as a true freshman, already understands the principles of verticality in defending (hands straight up, not getting into the body of the shooter) & the fundamentals of setting a non moving screen (luv the textbook x with the hands & pausing before releasing the pick)...gabby can run the floor which is key for getting back to play disruptive DEFENSE (coach charmin's tenure has been adversely impacted by recruiting non athletic posts that also had conditioning issues)

particularly noticeable wuz her demanding the ball down in the paint as the season progressed & then attacking the rim, with continued progress she will be an all acc standout in the future playing potentially 30+ minutes next season

there is zero chance that there's gonna any transfer portal player with gabby's upside, she is a special talent & a hometown hero setting a positive example for young girls in the bay area

I don't know Shocky. Over the last 4 months there have been several posts here by others that watched Gabby play for three or four minutes and are convinced she's not the answer. Of course on this issue, you might be disappointed but I happen to agree with you 100 percent! Looking forward to following her career at Cal.

I'm not worried about Gabby. i wondered before she came here as she came from a very small school that didn't play much competition. But that first practice answered that. I'm not sure leaps as high as Michele but she is as fast. She is not as strong as Michele and will need to hit the weight room. But not many women in all basketball are as strong as Michele. Other freshmen have more to work on.

So far from what I've seen- most often when Abigor gets a rebound next to the hoop and shoots she usually misses. When she is passed the ball while near the hoop she can make the shot. She is fast and hustles and is athletic. Just needs to get stronger and practice making her shot- i don't know whether gaining weight and strength will help her complete her shot. Usually when she comes in to sub for Onyiah to give her a break or due to a foul, soon after she commits a foul and is brought back out. But being just a freshman there can only be improvement. Just don't see her as the starting post immediately but there may end up being no other option after the portal process is through, and look at how quickly Wilkerson on the MBB team got to start.

Not exactly hometown, she is from same town and high school as my nieces and nephews (the youngest of which plays football there and DREAMS of becoming a player at Cal) in the IE which is def not LA.
Now Kayla, that's a homecoming lol

My brother and fam went and watched some of the Elenor Roosevelt hoops playoff games and said Burries (great hoop name) was amazing. I mean, he is Mc Donalds All American but he scored what, 44 or 47 in the state title match. WOW. 2nd most in a state title match since Golden Bear Lamond Murray's cousin Tracy Murray went for 64 in the Coliseum Arena. I sat courtside for that game.

Sidebar, it is crazy that Eastvale is so good so fast. The school is not quite 20 yrs old and the town was incorporated about 15 yrs ago. Maybe more surprising, the population is only about 70k!!!

Bringing it back to women's hoops, Eastvale is also very close to Etiwanda AND Puff!! and for most of my life it seemed like not much was there other than farms and stuff. And now they are a women's hoops power house and even the boys teams have been good.

To be clear, I am from and for the Bay, all day, but with my loved ones down there, I am a little bit of a fan boy lol

Kerr's daughter and son played for Cal. She was a libero for the volleyball team. i sat beside him in one game and asked if she played softball. Mainly third base since it was alot like her position in VBall.

yeah lulu twidale is putting up shots getting ready to be the bears leading scorer next season while australia's gold coast native continues to make inroads in earning a berkeley degree!!

lulu not only got beautiful shooting rhythm with a textbook release/arc on her 3 pointers but also a smokeshow ponytail & a captivating accent, she gotta continue to work on her d (needs next level conditioning) & her handle (too many mentally lazy azz turnover passes last season)
